We are working with the University of Oxford to find a Mechanical Workshop Technician.

Engineering teaching and research takes place at Oxford in a unified Department of Engineering Science whose academic staff are committed to a common engineering foundation, which includes research and study in most branches of the subject. The Department employs about 90 academic staff and around 250 research staff, all supported by an experienced team of teaching support staff, administrative staff and technicians.

About the Role

Oxford University are seeking a highly skilled and self-motivated Mechanical Workshop Technician to provide full-time technical support for the department's workshop at the Department of Engineering Science in Central Oxford). The post is permanent.

This is a wide-ranging role in a mechanical workshop, with a focus on providing high-quality manual and CNC machining to the Department. You will be responsible for manufacturing, modifying and repairing components and equipment for research, assisting with design and material selection as required. In addition, you will support the practical teaching of undergraduates. This will provide you with the opportunity to share your passion for practical engineering with students. You will also contribute to the Department's Outreach events demonstrating and teaching practical engineering to small groups from schools.

About You

You should possess a formal qualification, such as an HNC, BTEC, City and Guilds award or equivalent in an appropriate subject (e.g. mechanical engineering apprenticeship). Experience of use of CNC mills and/or lathes or a demonstrable willingness and aptitude to acquire these skills is essential, as well as experience of using standard mechanical workshop equipment. You should also be able to work independently towards a shared objective and work accurately with close attention to detail.
