Grid Engineer

Posted by GTS INTERNATIONAL LTD.

GTS Group are working with an innovative renewable energy company, dedicated to accelerating the shift toward a greener future by developing cutting-edge, subsidy-free renewable energy projects across the UK. Their team boasts decades of experience in successfully delivering large-scale energy projects.

Due to company growth, they are looking for a talented Grid Engineer to join their team.

You will ideally be situated in the South West of England, North Wales/Cheshire or the Central Belt of Scotland for occasional office visits.

Role Summary of the Grid Engineer:

As a Grid Engineer, you will play an essential role in ensuring that our renewable energy projects are connected to the grid efficiently and effectively. You'll be working within our grid connections team, managing the technical and regulatory processes that underpin the successful delivery of these projects. From identifying grid connection opportunities to liaising with stakeholders and overseeing the design and commissioning of power systems, you'll be instrumental in enabling our projects to power communities across the UK.

Key Responsibilities of the Grid Engineer:

  • Grid Connection Strategy: Identify and secure optimal grid connection points for new renewable energy developments across the UK's electricity distribution and transmission networks.
  • Application & Negotiation: Prepare and submit grid connection applications, ensuring all technical and commercial details are correct. Negotiate terms with network operators to secure favourable outcomes.
  • Portfolio Management: Manage a range of accepted grid connection offers, ensuring compliance with contractual milestones and maintaining effective oversight of project progress.
  • Collaborative Problem-Solving: Work closely with Independent Connection Providers (ICPs) and design consultants to specify, commission, and execute grid-related activities such as power system studies and contestable works.
  • Integration with Projects: Collaborate with internal project management teams to ensure that grid-related tasks are seamlessly incorporated into project plans and timelines.
  • Industry Engagement: Stay up to date with the latest developments in grid policy and regulatory changes by attending seminars, webinars, and industry events, and sharing key insights with your team.

What We're Looking For in Ideal Grid Engineer:

  • Educational Background: Degree or HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering or a similar discipline.
  • Industry Expertise: A good understanding of electricity grid operations, relevant codes and regulations, and experience in grid connection projects, ideally within the renewable energy sector.
  • Technical Skills: Experience in preparing and submitting grid applications, as well as working with DNOs, TSOs, and ICPs to secure and manage grid offers. Familiarity with complex grid connection issues like curtailment assessments and cost structures (TNUoS and DNUoS) is a plus.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to analyze grid connection offers, spot technical and commercial discrepancies, and proactively seek alternative connection options to save costs or reduce connection times.
  • Communication: Skilled at presenting complex technical information to non-technical colleagues and stakeholders, ensuring clarity and understanding across the board.
  • Commercial Awareness: A solid grasp of the financial aspects of grid connections, contract compliance, and the broader impact of grid connections on project success.
