Underwriting international business via a Lloyds Syndicate platform and high value US risks through Bermuda.
Overview
- The successful candidate will be responsible for providing in-house legal services to support various business lines and functions, including the General Casualty (Bermuda), Healthcare (London), Professional Lines (London) and Reinsurance (facultative) underwriting business activities.
- This is a multifaceted role working in close partnership with the underwriting teams and collaborating with the claims function, senior executives and other internal / external stakeholders. There is huge scope to mould and develop the role, build relationships and act with quasi-autonomy while still been part of a small legal team.
- Through research and analysis, you will explore contractual disputes and apply legal coverage interpretations to policy wordings, clauses, endorsements etc.
- Act in a pro-active advisory capacity to provide guidance, support and training to underwriters to ensure that wordings accurately reflect the intention of the underwriter and provide a clarity of policy response.
- This role will require a lawyer mentality rather than a contract wordings mindset.
What is required
- Applicants will need to show current understanding of US and international caselaw development resulting from litigation, arbitration and tribunals.
- Knowledge of Bermuda Forms is a bonus but not essential.
- English qualified solicitor or barrister
- A min. of 8 years PQ experience with at least 4 years working in a (re)insurance environment - in-house legal counsel with a (Re)insurer or Captive or Lloyds Broker or in private practice but focused on the insurance sphere.
