SEN Teaching Assistant - Severe and Complex Learning Disabilities

About the Role:
We are seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join our team, supporting pupils aged 4-19 with severe and complex learning disabilities. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), working in a supportive and dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide tailored support to students with complex learning needs, helping them engage with the curriculum and develop essential life skills.
  • Assist in the use of hoisting and other mobility aids to support pupils with physical needs.
  • Participate in feeding, personal care, and hygiene routines for students requiring additional assistance.
  • Implement and support individualised education plans (IEPs) in collaboration with the teaching staff and other specialists.
  • Foster a nurturing, inclusive environment that promotes student well-being, safety, and emotional development.
  • Work closely with teachers, therapists, and other professionals to deliver a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to learning.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Experience working with children and young people who have severe and complex learning disabilities, including PMLD.
  • Familiarity with hoisting techniques and equipment, or a willingness to undergo training.
  • Ability to provide personal care (feeding, toileting, changing) with dignity and respect for the students' needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Patience, empathy, and a proactive approach to supporting pupils' physical and emotional needs.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Relevant qualifications in education or special needs support (e.g., CACHE Level 2/3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent).
  • Experience working within a SEN or PMLD setting.
  • Knowledge of sensory or communication support strategies such as Makaton or PECS is advantageous.
