Higher Electronics Engineer

The successful candidate will be an instrumental part of a small team designing, constructing, and repairing electronic and electro-mechanical equipment and systems to support the research and provision of operational services across UKHSA's Radiation, Chemical and Environment Hazards Directorate. You will be working with an array of interesting equipment to help facilitate protecting the public from such exposure as well as using your experience to conduct continuous improvement across your remit.

UKHSA's Radiation, Chemical and Environment Hazards Directorate provides advice, research, and services to protect the public from exposure to chemicals and poisons, ionising and non-ionising radiation, and other environmental hazards.

Location: Chilton, Oxfordshire - candidates will occasionally be expected to work irregular hours. There will also be a requirement to travel within the UK and occasionally overseas.

Relocation expenses are not available.

Responsibilities section:

As an Electronics Engineer, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Design and construct electronic and electro-mechanical equipment and systems. This covers digital and analogue design, the use of microcontrollers, control systems and data acquisition.
  • Develop application software
  • Work on safety related control systems (safety interlocking) for radiological and machinery safety.
  • Commission and test equipment.
  • Carry out modifications of existing equipment.
  • Provide fault diagnosis, repair and maintenance of electronic and electromechanical equipment and systems.
  • Provide advice to scientific staff on the purchase and use of electronic equipment.

Desired Criteria:

It is important through your CV and Statement of Suitability of 1500 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the following criteria:

Essential

  • Qualification to Degree level in electronic engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Electronics and electro-mechanical design, development and support.
  • Practical experience in electrical and electronic construction techniques.
  • Practical experience in using electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analysers and signal generators
  • Knowledge and understanding of mechanical engineering techniques.
  • CAD design
  • Writing/developing application software

Desirable

  • Good oral and written communication
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications
  • Understanding of radiological protection principles
  • Training/experience in emergency response.
