As a leader, you will be a role model inspiring and holding others to account for delivery against all operational and financial targets whilst ensuring exemplary standards of health and safety and compliance with statutory legislation. You will reporting to the Director of Operations (Construction).

I help to keep people safe and warm by...

  • Leading, motivating, and inspiring the team to successfully deliver and model desired behaviours
  • Translating strategic objectives into robust plans with operational, financial, commercial, and safety targets for the region and engaging the Senior Team to ensure successful delivery
  • Ensuring safety case responsibilities and operational risks are communicated, understood, and adhered to, including statutory obligations
  • Controlling, managing, and coordinating resources during emergency incidents
  • Forecasting delivery outputs from the plan, continuously reviewing and planning for outperformance, implementing remedial action if required
  • Assisting with the delivery strategy and preparation of contract bid packages of work (Connections, Metering, ELR)
  • Participating in monthly/quarterly performance reviews with contractors, supported by Commercial and Procurement
  • Managing and developing teams and direct reports in alignment with the SGN performance management framework
  • Ensuring operational and business change initiatives are effectively deployed and embedded in the depot
  • Assessing resource requirements over the medium to long term and implementing plans to ensure sustainability
  • Analysing Management Information and taking action to close gaps in performance standards that are not on target
  • Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and innovation, designing and implementing plans, and reviewing their impact
  • Modelling exceptional standards of personal and process safety and promoting a behavioural safety culture
  • Chairing regular senior management meetings to discuss performance against targets and areas for improvement, setting clear objectives for the Senior Team and holding them accountable for delivery
  • Chairing high-level disciplinary/capability and grievance hearings
  • Providing mentorship and promoting self-development to support a robust succession plan for the next generation of leaders
  • Taking overall accountability for operational budgets typically up to £20m and holding overall responsibility for ensuring the department achieves its targets
  • Embracing and promoting stakeholder engagement and customer initiatives
  • Advocating positive employee engagement and maintaining cooperative working relationships with trade unions
  • Reviewing the strategic risks associated with the region and seeking measures to mitigate those risks, ensuring they are documented in line with company risk management
  • Taking ownership of the region's Business Continuity Management (BCM) plan and response
  • Collaborating with other depots, sharing learnings, and implementing best practices
  • Undertaking standby requirements when needed

What you'll need

  • Proven track record of leading and managing a large safety-critical operation at a senior level
  • Ability to manage technical experts to maximise safe and efficient operations
  • Previous experience in a regulated utility business is desirable
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen and understanding of key financial and operational drivers
  • Solid communication, motivational and influencing skills with an ability to engage and influence people at all levels
  • A role model for company values and behaviours
  • Evidence of successful succession planning including the development of teams and individuals
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent is desirable and holds, or working towards gas-related professional qualifications
  • IOSH Managing Safety is required (if not already qualified the incumbent must work towards a qualification within a 6-month timescale)
  • Experience of collaborative working with a direct labour workforce in a unionised environment
  • Experience in managing a contract labour workforce alongside a direct labour workforce
