Financial Controller

Posted by Mitchell Adam.

Our client is a rapidly growing, privately owned SME business based in central Wolverhampton. They have undergone a period of remarkable growth in the last two years; due to new projects / contracts the business is expected to double its turnover in the next two years. Critical to the success of these growth plans is the appointment of a new Financial Controller to oversee, manage and control the expansion.

Reporting directly to the MD and liaising regularly with the board and several key people in the business, the successful applicant will be given total control of the finance function for this exciting business. You will be tasked with implementing sound controls across the sales operation, implementing a robust and detailing reporting and forecasting schedule, improving / upgrading the software package to cope with the increasing workload and improving general controls across the entire business (including projects & cost controls).

As a member of the senior management team, you will be responsible for capably and comfortably guiding the business through a challenging but exciting growth phase as well as advising the board and MD of operational recommendations in order to achieve the figures required to sustain this expansion. Additionally, you will provide regular and insightful management information to the MD based on thorough and reasoned analysis, complete the management accounts pack for the board (and make commercial / operational recommendations based on this information), prepare the statutory accounts for the external accountants, produce regular forecasts for the MD and recruit / manage a small finance team.

Ideally, you will:

  • Be an accomplished qualified accountant with experience of seeing an SME business through a period of growth (knowledge of implementation of processes, procedures, controls, etc. are a distinct advantage);
  • Have proven experience of producing management / financial accounts, budgets & forecasts, management information and detailed analysis - being comfortable when making operational recommendations to Directors of a business;
  • Possess demonstrable leadership and management skills, with effective communication skills allowing you to competently engage with and influence people of all levels;
  • Have the ability, confidence and discipline to identify and create your own workload independently.

In return, you will:

  • Enjoy an evolving position of responsibility in a fresh, emergent business during a genuinely exciting period of 'boom' growth;
  • Get the chance to make a real impact in the business, having complete and utter autonomy over how you successfully manage the controls and processes you implement;
  • Develop your commercial acumen in a role that will place heavy emphasis on making operational improvements as well as implementing effective controls;;
  • Enjoy a senior role that will quickly develop and grow as the business continues to expand, offering tangible career progression;
  • Enjoy a unique opportunity to build your own finance team to help you achieve your objectives for the business.

This is a great opportunity for a capable, assured and positive qualified accountant to become a vital member of a business, steering and guiding them through a massively exciting period of remarkable growth and success. You will build your commercial and operational business acumen, as well as truly testing your technical skills as an accountant - helping you progress your career very quickly as a result. A perfect role for budding FD's of the future.
