Head of Product Engineering

Location: Portsmouth
Salary: £70,000 - £80,000 + bonus scheme
We are seeking a Head of Product Engineering to take ownership of the electrical, electronic, and regulatory scope for all hardware projects. This role involves supporting the product portfolio both in-field and under development, working with suppliers, leading the Product Validation and Regulatory teams, and managing a team of 17 technical and managerial colleagues. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electronics manufacturing, product design, and regulatory affairs.
Day to day of the Head of Product Engineering role:
- Oversee electrical, electronic, and regulatory aspects of hardware projects, ensuring a solid foundation for ongoing product production.
- Lead the Product Validation team to ensure capabilities and resources are in place to support the business.
- Lead the Regulatory team to provide expertise and support, ensuring products are safe and legally compliant.
- Lead the In Life Product Engineering Solutions team to support products throughout their lifespan.
- Manage product development projects to completion, collaborating with multiple functions across global businesses.
- Drive simplification, standardisation, and cost optimisation in project portfolios.
Required Skills & Qualifications of the Head of Product Engineering:
- Expertise in electronics manufacturing and product design.
- Honours degree in electrical or electronic engineering or similar discipline.
- Experience in bringing electronic products to production with high quality expectations.
- Knowledge of RF devices and protocols.
- Understanding of regulatory affairs at a regional or international level.
- Familiarity with global regulatory approval requirements for household equipment.
- Experience with CB/CE/cULus, FCC, RCM, UKAS, KCC, NOM, INMetro, BSMI, HACCP.
- Experience in a Validation and Test environment, with the ability to apply and recommend test strategies.
- Experience supporting launched products and managing product improvements and maintenance.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to lead a technical project team.
- Good analytical problem-solving skills with the ability to generate, interpret technical data, and provide actionable recommendations.
- Working knowledge of Schematic capture, layout, and gerber editing software is an advantage.
