Overview:

We are currently recruiting for an Estimator to work with our client's family-owned business which produces high quality work of a varied nature, including alterations and extensions, often to listed buildings & within conservation areas. They also undertake new bespoke builds, various commercial works and maintenance contracts covering West Sussex, venturing into Hampshire & Chichester .

They are very keen to give this opportunity of joining their small Estimating team to a military veteran with some construction experience from either their military career or in their civilian career.

Applications from non-military veterans will be given consideration.

Job Purpose:

  • Production of competitive quotations for a wide range of construction projects from initial client meetings through to client negotiations and hand-over to the Contracts Team. Establish what the client wants, research materials where necessary. Obtain quotations from suppliers and sub-contractors and translate this into a package for the client.
  • Positively represent the company by upholding its values. Constructively working alongside colleagues and sub-contract partners to deliver the company goals and ambitions. Contribute towards the business goals and ambitions by actively promoting teamwork, outstanding customer service and, where appropriate, suggesting improvements or alternative ways of working to create efficiencies, improve productivity and our work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Pre-contract Stage:

  • Create quantity take off based on tender drawings/documents
  • Liaise with consultant/ architects regarding ambiguities contract work scope and seek clarifications
  • Send Enquiries to subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Create a visible list with who has been chosen for the job
  • Analyse and compare quotations received and clarifying exclusions/qualifications or discrepancies
  • Complete tender on time and accurately
  • Create draft programme of the works and a payment schedule if required
  • Handover to Contracts Managers

Contract Stage:

  • Negotiate discounts with the main sub-contractors.
  • Place P.O. and inform all sub-contractors of draft programme
  • Visit site as and when required to monitor progress.
  • Prepare and agree payments applications/valuations -claim against value of work done for measured works so that payment is received on time so to achieve a healthy cash-flow
  • Prepare and compile variation claim documents
  • Analyse and recommend subcontract payment application based on actual progress and quote submitted during pre-contract stage
  • Attend progress meetings and provide updates to client with projection of costs as required

Post Contract Stage:

  • Settle final statement with client by given a breakdown report so to show each stage of the project and the expenses incurred
  • Analyse and collate all financial records so to review and amend company rates if required for upcoming jobs
  • Take feedback from Contracts Managers/Site Supervisors regarding the rates and sub-cons used.

Tender Analysis:

  • Analysing the tender results and identifying the areas our tender was less competitive in line with the other participated contractors.
  • Overview the other tender sums and figure out the other contractors' mark-up rate. Log in quote list & results spreadsheet where our tender stands.

Skills & Experience:

  • Expert knowledge of building methods, regulations and health and safety procedures supported by a significant level of experience within the industry.
  • Estimating and sales experience preferred, where no experience candidate must demonstrate the characteristics needed to succeed in a sales environment.
  • Formal estimating qualification desirable.
  • Good all-round IT skills
