Maintenance Assistant

Friends of the Elderly (FotE) is a not-for-profit charity dedicated to providing excellent care with a family feel, we have been supporting older people for over 100 years. The charity provides care home and day care services for older people, as well as grants for older people in financial difficulty.

The Lawn is a beautiful Georgian period home in the rural village of Holybourne, Hampshire. The building has been sympathetically modernised to meet the needs of all our residents and we have a dedicated, well-trained and compassionate team of staff that care for our residents.

As our Maintenance Assistant, you will carry out responsive and preventative repairs, maintenance and improvements to our Home so it is safe for residents, staff and visitors. Always following operational, health, safety and environmental policies, you will complete inspections of our buildings and grounds, keeping inspections records up to date and completing all compliance checks and documentation as required.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Testing fire alarms, emergency lighting, etc.
  • Internal and external fabric maintenance such as walls, doors, windows, car parks and fences.
  • Painting and decorating - inside and outside.
  • Fixing furniture, fixtures and fittings.
  • Overseeing basic security such as key control, locking up and securing items.
  • Maintaining heating, hot water, electricity and ventilation.
  • Water drainage such as guttering.

We would like you to join us with previous experience in caretaking and we would particularly like to hear from those who have experience managing older buildings. This is a varied role therefore you will be experienced in dealing with a wide range of repairs and general maintenance and, when required, you will be comfortable overseeing external contractors ensuring they have all the correct resources and plans in place.

With the ability to manage your own workload, you will have both excellent problem-solving skills and proven DIY skills and will be able to start and finish a job to a high standard. Knowledge of hand and power tools and repairs of common electrical and mechanical items will help you succeed in this role, along with practical skills in areas such as carpentry, decorating and plumbing.
