Legal Officer

About the Role: We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Legal Officer to support a caseload of child protection matters. This role requires a proactive individual with a strong legal background and the ability to work under pressure to strict deadlines. Key duties include attendance on client officers, drafting documents, attending pre-proceedings meetings, and providing simple legal/procedural advice. Limited court attendance on standard issues will also be required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide oral and written legal advice to officers seeking professional guidance in potentially complex cases.
  • Undertake legal research to ensure correct advice is given and procedures are followed.
  • Receive instructions, sometimes on short notice, request supporting information, documents, and/or evidence from relevant Council departments, and determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Draft, prepare, review, and complete various legal documents, including contracts, agreements, notices, traffic regulation orders, and highways notices.
  • Examine and review expert evidence or reports.
  • Contribute to committee reports, officer authorizations, decision records, and briefings for Members and Officers.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Law degree, CILEX, or equivalent legal qualification.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and/or membership of a professional body.
  • Fellowship of the Institute of Legal Executives is desirable.
  • Experience of attending Committees or other meetings.
  • Experience in dealing with complex caseloads.
  • Experience in drafting, preparing, reviewing, and completing various property documents.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to plan, manage, and deliver complex projects.
  • Examine legal documents to ensure the accuracy of claims.
  • Use knowledge to analyze and solve problems with an appreciation of possible longer-term implications.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills:

  • Ability to establish professional, effective working relationships with a range of partners/colleagues.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex, sensitive, or contentious data to individuals and groups, overcoming barriers to communication.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to draft clear and concise legal documents.

Additional Requirements:

  • Standard DBS check for the successful applicant
