Director/Head of Preclinical R&D

Your new company
You will be joining an exciting biotech developing a number of innovative therapies currently expanding their team as they move their lead asset from Phase 1 into Phase 2 trials.
They have a hybrid working set up and a highly collaborative and high-performing atmosphere, with an experienced team who have a background in biotech and a Board that includes ex-C-suite members of top global pharma companies.

Your new role
You will be taking a senior, strategic position within the company leading the company's preclinical and non-clinical R&D efforts to support the development of medicines both in the clinic and in pre-clinical discovery and development.
This is a permanent position, with a hybrid working arrangement, requiring some time on-site at the company's offices in London, though there is a strong flexible working arrangement in place.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Lead and manage the Preclinical Research and Discovery strategy for the main asset and pipeline programs, with expert input.
  • Supervise daily activities, team, and budget for Preclinical Research and Discovery, including contingency planning.
  • Develop and implement a variety of research strategies to support the company's R&D efforts.
  • Lead the production of pharmacology data to support the development of multiple assets.
  • Coordinate with third parties, including CROs, development/commercial partners, and academic centres, to execute the strategy.
  • Oversee Preclinical submissions and interactions with regulatory agencies such as the FDA, MHRA, EMA, etc.
  • Work with Clinical Development and Intellectual Property teams to provide non-clinical pharmacology expertise and identify IP opportunities.
  • Ensure preclinical studies comply with SOPs, regulatory guidelines, and ICH requirements, maintaining GxP and H&S standards through relevant training.

What you'll need to succeed
As well as strong communication and interpersonal skills, you should have:

  • BSc, MSc or Advanced Degree (eg PhD, PharmD, etc) in Pharmacology or a related scientific discipline such as Biology (or equivalent experience) other appropriate scientific discipline
  • Significant track record driving Preclinical / Non-clinical research within a pharmaceutical, biotech or CRO company
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidelines pertinent to preclinical drug development and pharmaceutical drug development
  • Strong understanding / experience within CNS / neuro disease, ideally gained from hands-on experience working on / leading drug discovery and development programmes in this area
  • The ability to relay complex information to both internal stakeholders and external collaborators
  • A track record of leading research programmes, teams and projects, ideally including budget and/or CapEx / OpEx spend
  • Good people leadership, either as a direct line manager or within a matrix set-up
  • Experience developing and implementing research strategies
