Job Title: Assembly Fitter.

Location: Birkenhead

Employment Type: Temporary to Permanent

Hours: 37 hours per week

Shift Pattern:

  • Monday to Thursday: 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM
  • Friday: 7:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Purpose of the Job:

The Assembly Fitter will be responsible for the mechanical fitting of rolling stock parts, including working with components such as brakes and pantographs. The role requires the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, meeting production deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform tasks within the assembly areas as required, ensuring flexibility in roles and shift patterns.
  • Assist in non-assembly areas and undertake necessary training to adapt to various assembly tasks.
  • Overhaul, repair, assemble, and test a variety of equipment, including calipers, actuators, discs, and brake control equipment.
  • Build and operate test installations according to test specifications and schematics, adjusting units to meet required outputs.
  • Investigate, diagnose, and correct faults in equipment that does not meet required outputs or fit together properly. Notify appropriate personnel of potential issues.
  • Operate monitoring, measuring, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Carry out minor maintenance tasks and routine preventative maintenance, including outside the assembly areas.
  • Participate in module activities such as improvement groups and business improvement activities (e.g., Kaizen, 5S).
  • Raise Non-Conformance Records (NCRs) as necessary.
  • Communicate production deficiencies and suggest corrective actions to supervision.
  • Ensure proper storage of tools, gauges, and measuring equipment.

Skills, Knowledge, and Competence:

  • Comprehensive understanding of the assembly, testing, and fault diagnosis of trained products.
  • Experience in heavy engineering or fitting; experience in rolling stock fitting is ideal. Experience in similar fields, such as automotive fitting, is also acceptable.
  • Ability to identify and solve potential problems using appropriate tools, with a focus on prevention.
  • Capability to influence and motivate others to achieve individual and team goals.
  • Ability to suggest new or alternative methods to achieve objectives.
  • Adaptability and perseverance when faced with changes in goals or methods.
  • Strong teamwork skills, with the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively to achieve shared objectives.
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings, and proficiency in using engineering tools and equipment.
  • Understanding of test methods and their significance to safety-critical products.
