About Our Client:

Our client is a a London Borough Council and is searching for support in the legal services industry. They are committed to providing strategic legal advice and solutions to other Councils, Members, and Officers in achieving their corporate goals. As a shared back office support service, our client delivers high-quality legal work in various disciplines, including civil litigation, housing, and corporate issues, across multiple sites and organisations.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a personal caseload of legal work and act as a subject expert with appropriate support and supervision from a Senior Lawyer or Principal Lawyer.
  • Notify the Senior Lawyer of all high-risk matters and provide assistance to other teams as requested by the Principal Lawyer.
  • Support strategic projects and multi-functional teams to ensure an innovative and commercial solutions focus.
  • Supervise junior team members, including trainees and support staff.
  • Carry out advocacy when necessary on own caseload and attend meetings to provide legal and governance advice.
  • Produce or comment upon reports for various Council meetings or decision-making processes.
  • Work some evenings, weekends, and occasional public holidays to meet customer service requirements and represent the Councils with residents, elected members, and external bodies.
  • Provide the partner Councils with the best legal advice to ensure proper decision-making.

Essential (Knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience):

  • A practising solicitor, barrister, or chartered legal executive with a practising certificate.
  • Demonstrated competence in people management, leadership, service improvement, and managing transformational change.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in civil litigation, housing, and corporate issues.
  • Understanding of local government functions, the new local government agenda, and the financial, legal, and political context of local government.

Desirable (Knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience):

  • Knowledge of local government powers and duties, along with expertise in areas such as procurement & contract, planning, or development.
