Role & Responsibilities

We are currently seeking an experienced and motivated Sous Chef to join our team at Engine House. As a Sous Chef, you will work closely with Head of Cafes & Events to oversee kitchen operations and ensure the highest standards of food quality and presentation. This role presents an exciting opportunity for a culinary professional to contribute their expertise to a vibrant cafe environment and to grow into Head Chef role.

  • Assist the Head of Cafes & Events with menu planning, recipe development, and food costing.
  • Supervise and coordinate kitchen staff.
  • To fill out relevant Food Safety Checks and to comply with Food Hygiene regulations
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the kitchen, including food production, plating, and presentation.
  • Monitor inventory levels and ordering of food supplies to maintain sufficient stock levels while minimizing waste.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the kitchen, including equipment maintenance and sanitation procedures.
  • Train and mentor staff in proper cooking techniques, safety procedures, and food handling practices.
  • Assist in scheduling staff and managing labour costs effectively.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Cafes and Events to create daily specials and seasonal menu offerings.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety and sanitation regulations at all times.

Our ideal Sous Chef

  • Proven experience as a Sous Chef or senior line cook in a cafe or restaurant setting
  • Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to motivate and inspire kitchen staff
  • Excellent culinary skills and knowledge of various cuisines and cooking techniques
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to detail and a passion for food quality and presentation
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations
  • Creative flair and willingness to contribute ideas to menu development
