Early Years Childcare Practitioner

Purpose of the job: To work as a Key person and as part of the Playgroup team under the direction of the Playgroup Manager & Playgroup Assistant Manager.To provide safe, high-quality education/learning and a nurturing environment for young children. Enabling children to learn through play, based on our ethos.

Term Time only

Mon - Fri - 8:30am - 16:30pm

Main Duties:

  • To assist with the planning of the curriculum & develop ideas based on the interests of the children.
  • To help set up the playroom & prepare activities with the children for the daily programme and maintain the resources and cleanliness/tidiness throughout the day.To help tidy away at the end of the session.
  • To act upon requests as directed by the Manager and Assistant Manager
  • To be a Key person to a small group of children, liaising closely with parents/carers
  • and ensuring each child's needs are recognised and met.
  • To advise the playgroup Manager/Assistant Manager of any concerns e.g., over children,parents, or the safety of equipment, preserving confidentiality as necessary
  • Keep records of the "key-children's" development and progress in the appropriate form using the online Tapestry Learning Journal
  • To teach children, offering an appropriate level of support and stimulation
  • Participate in brief meetings after each session and attend staff meetings and participate in staff appraisals & supervision.
  • To attend in-service training courses and meetings as required. To keep up to date with current issues and development concerning early years and to under take further training as required.
  • To keep complete confidentiality any information regarding the children, their families or other staff which is learned as part of the job.
  • To administer basic first aid if necessary
  • To ensure that the Playgroup is a safe environment for children, that equipment is safe, standards of hygiene are high, safety procedures are always implemented, and fire drills are regularly practised thus supporting the member of staff appointed for Health & Safety at the Playgroup.
  • To be come involved in the Playgroup'sfundraising activities.
  • To demonstrate a firm commitment to parental participation, recognising the individual needs of the parent and offering support to parents where appropriate.
  • To embrace the diversity & cultural values of all that attend the setting.
  • To be able to work using initiative as well as being an adaptable part of a small dynamic team supporting other team members where necessary.

  • To understand the role of children's play in their physical, emotional, and intellectual development.
  • To have a firm knowledge of childcare practises within a multi-cultural setting and commitment to valuing & respecting the diversity of those who attend & work within the setting.
  • To challenge all aspects of racism at every level within the playgroup, including work with the children, parents, and the committee
  • To create a non- sexist atmosphere by introducing appropriate activities to encourage equal development for both sexes, fostered through language, play and other activities.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

EssentialCriteria

  • Experience of working in a pre-school setting
  • NVQ level 2/3 or equivalent
  • Sound understanding of child development, and of children's needs.
  • Ability to work with parents and to encourage their involvement.
  • Commitment to equal opportunities and understanding of religious and cultural diversity.
  • Ability to write clear reports and have basic IT skills.
  • Friendly, flexible approach
