Firearms Licensing Officer

We are currently recruiting for Firearms Licensing Officer to work for Devon and Cornwall Police at their headquarters in Middlemoor, Exeter.

The role will be temporary with the look for it to be extended and you will be working Monday to Friday 37 hours a week.

PLEASE NOTE DUE TO THE POLICE VETTING CRITERIA YOU MUST HAVE BEEN RESIDING WITHIN THE UK CONTINUOUSLY FOR AT LEAST 3 YEARS AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION.

Principal Responsibility

To manage the continuous and ongoing process to monitor and assess risk (24 hours a day, 365 days a year). In particular, by:

  • Processing certificate holders that have been brought to police attention and initiate the relevant risk management process.
  • Using email notifications, daily logs using the relevant operational police information management platform and any other relevant force system to seek out and identify unsuitable gun owners and where necessary initiate the immediate removal of firearms from possession, commence suitability enquiries and prepare reports for review by the FEO supervisors and SMT
  • Instigating enquiries into potential revocation / refusal /surrender of firearm /shotgun / explosive certificates
  • Monitoring and recording the status of enquiries ensuring they are completed in a timely manner
  • Providing assistance to FEO's and other departments during the course of enquiries.
  • Ensuring supervisors are aware of the incident and act on any actions requested by them
  • Providing specialist advice and knowledge.
  • Ensure local intelligence systems are updated with new information.
  • Proactively gather intelligence to identify unsuitable certificate holders.
  • Working with other internal and external stakeholders to increase awareness and reporting of certificate holder activity which may cast doubt on suitability

In addition, there is a function intrinsic to this role. An employer's duty of care and current legislation allows the Force to establish if a potential applicant could carry this out, either with or without reasonable adjustments. This function is:

  • Working with Disturbing Evidence of Disturbing Circumstances

To assist in ensuring applicants would be able to undertake this function of the role, a medical assessment via a questionnaire will be undertaken and may subsequently require a consultation with the Occupational Health Support Unit.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Understanding of Firearms Acts
  • Understanding of the Home Office Publication: Firearms Law Guidance to Police.
  • An investigative mindset and in-depth knowledge of investigative systems and procedures, through any recognised law enforcement organisation or any organisation that has a requirement to process legislation.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrable team working and communication skills
  • Workload and time management skills
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office applications
