Assistant GIS Developer

Posted by National Trust.

Summary

Working within the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Product Team you will be responsible for helping to develop new tools and automated processes using GIS to support the National Trust in delivering its strategic objectives. With support from the GIS developers, you will use VertiGIS Studio, ArcGIS Online, Python and FME to design and implement candidate GIS applications for users across a wide variety of business areas.

This is a fixed term contract until the end of February 2026.

What it's like to work here

We've got passionate people in all our teams, and we've got so much more we want to achieve. We're for ever, for everyone and we really mean that. We don't want to stop at 5.5 million members, and we want everyone to feel welcome and enjoy access to our places, so we need to reach new audiences in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them without losing the hearts and minds of those that are already with us.

Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon and there will be an expectation for you to attend the office. However, there is flexibility on where you are based at other times. You will be required to work at a National Trust location for 40-60% of your working week. This will be discussed in more detail at interview.

What you'll be doing

You'll work with many potential users across the National Trust to identify opportunities where GIS technology can improve processes to deliver the strategy. Once identified you will work with the GIS Developers to define the requirements and develop proof-of-concept applications. This will be using ArcGIS online and VertGIS products and using custom Python and FME scripts to automate the data process. The focus of the role will be on developing GIS workflows and automation scripts rather than any GIS analysis.

This is a great opportunity to learn the software development life cycle and implement GIS technology using the latest Software as a Service technologies.
