Location: Northampton
Salary: £30,980 - £45,150 per annum, dependent on qualifications and experience
Contract Type: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:45 am to 4:45 pm (initial one-year contract with potential for permanency)

Are you an experienced Science Teacher with a passion for supporting young people with special educational needs? We are seeking a dedicated Head of Science to join our team in Northampton, inspiring students and helping them reach their full potential.

About the School:
Our Northampton site is an independent, mixed special school catering to students aged 11 to 19 who have behavioral, emotional, and social difficulties, as well as various special educational needs. We provide a safe, supportive learning environment where pupils thrive in small, focused groups, guided by compassionate professionals dedicated to their development. This role involves teaching science within a broad, balanced curriculum designed to promote both academic progress and personal growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver engaging, high-quality science lessons tailored to individual student needs, fostering long-term understanding of key concepts
  • Set clear, achievable learning targets that build on prior knowledge and promote measurable progress
  • Use continuous assessment to inform teaching, adapting methods to support optimal learning outcomes
  • Promote reading fluency, confidence, and enjoyment as part of every student's learning journey
  • Manage classroom behavior positively, aligning with school policies
  • Maintain a stimulating, safe learning environment
  • Take on pastoral responsibilities, providing 1:1 support as needed to encourage emotional well-being and academic ambition
  • Engage in professional development and contribute to school life, including school events, routines, and duties

Qualifications and Experience:
Essential Criteria:

  • GCSE English and Maths (Grade C or equivalent)
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Degree in a relevant subject
  • Proven experience of successful science teaching at group or class level

Desirable Criteria:

  • Higher degree qualifications
  • Experience with special education
  • Knowledge of Ofsted inspection requirements and SEN Code of Practice

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive relationships with students, staff, and the wider school community
  • High tolerance levels, resilience, and flexibility
