Planner / Senior Planner

Role Overview

We have an exciting new opportunity for a RTPI and/or RICS qualified Planner to join the Cardiff Planning Team. The team's reach is particularly diverse, with a strong pipeline of projects for a wide variety of clients, acting UK-wide – spanning developers, investors, major corporates / owner occupiers, land owning charities and education organisations.

This role is targeted at candidates with an interest in broadening their experience of planning and being closely involved with interesting projects and clients. Key requirements are:

  • MRTPI and/or MRICS (or Associate RTPI), ideally with 3+ years' of practical experience.
  • An enjoyment of writing, with excellent language skills and ability to effectively communicate planning arguments.
  • A proven ability to multi-task, across many projects, helping to steer the team's workload, managing projects capably – and reporting to directors, associate directors and associates in this team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare planning appraisals of land, buildings and concepts.
  • Undertake research and analysis.
  • Assist in the preparation of planning applications, including planning statements.
  • Assist in the co-ordination and preparation of Environmental Statements.
  • Co-ordinate and manage projects.
  • Write reports, interpreting data and making clear and relevant recommendations.
  • Contribute to the preparation/editing of Design & Access Statements and other planning supporting documents.
  • Liaise and negotiate with planning officers, employees of consultee organisations, stakeholders and third parties.
  • Liaise and cultivate good relationships with clients and fellow professionals.

In addition to the tasks described above, the job holder may be required to carry out other duties as may reasonably be required from time to time.

  • Maintain an awareness of market conditions and the impact of government policies.
  • Keep informed about documents relating to planning policy and practice.
  • Build relationships with other divisions within Savills.
  • Attend external events to create local contacts and identify business opportunities.

Key Skills

We are looking for a candidate with an interest in broadening their knowledge and experience of planning and being closely involved with interesting projects and clients. Key requirements include:

  • MRTPI / AssocRTPI or MRICS (with relevant planning experience).
  • Detailed knowledge of the UK town planning and governmental systems- in England and Wales.
  • Strong verbal, numerical and report writing skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills – prioritising and working to deadlines.
  • A ‘can do', hands-on team player.
  • Good interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • Self-motivated and proactive.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Basic understanding and use of GIS desirable.

This position of Senior Planner / Planner is an important role in the Cardiff Planning Team – helping to deliver, a wide range of exciting and high profile projects. The Savills Planning Team in Cardiff consists of 14 fee earners and is a highly respected in Wales and is an integral part of the biggest planning consultancy in the UK with over 240 planning specialists covering every land use sector and geographical area in the UK.

The team is client focused so acts for clients throughout the UK proving a healthy blend of local, regional and national schemes. Examples of current projects include Glan Llyn (for St Modwen Developments), numerous housing developers including PLC housebuilders, regional housebuilding and RSLs, Copr Bay redevelopment scheme in Swansea, the promotion of land in most of the M4 authorities, Cardiff International Sports Village, Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay, numerous renewable energy schemes including DNS proposals for wind development across Wales, Wylfa nuclear power station, preparation of planning applications for UK data centre developers, a significant commercial scheme in Bristol City Centre, new and redeveloped sports stadia including Wrexham Football Club.

The Planning team is part of the largest property services firm in Wales and works seamlessly with colleagues in Development, Commercial Investment, Office Agency, New Homes, Energy & Sustainability and Property Management.
