A brand new vacancy for a Surface Chemist with an incredible biotech start-up has become available, based at state of the art labs in West London (W12). The Surface Chemist will lead the modification and characterisation of materials and surfaces to optimise assays at the microscale. You will carry out proof of concepts and develop and scale up the most promising solutions working cross-functionally with molecular biology and engineering teams.
Key responsibilities:
- Engineer cutting-edge surface solutions by designing, testing, and optimizing advanced surface treatments and functional coatings for metals, inorganic materials, and plastics in biosensing applications
- Unlock material insights through comprehensive characterization of solid/liquid interface behavior using sophisticated techniques including electrochemistry, optical imaging, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy
- Validate innovation through experimentation by conducting experiments to evaluate chip designs, materials performance, and the real-world impact of surface treatments under actual application conditions
- Drive evidence-based decisions by analyzing complex experimental data, creating compelling technical reports and presentations, and contributing to intellectual property through patent drafts and scientific publications
- Lead cross-functional innovation by collaborating with diverse teams to successfully implement and scale promising solutions from concept to commercial reality
- Build strategic partnerships by engaging with key vendors and supporting critical discussions with manufacturing partners to ensure seamless project execution
- Stay at the forefront of scientific advancement by actively monitoring emerging trends in surface science and bioassays through literature review and participation in national and international conferences
Qualification required:
- D. or Master's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a related field with a focus on surface chemistry.
- Experience assessing and altering the adhesion, wettability, conductivity, or biocompatibility of materials.
- Background using silanes, surfactants, proteins or antibodies.
- Familiarity with analytical tools and methods for determining analyte presence and analyte quantity, as well as material properties such as adhesion, wettability, conductivity, adsorption, passivation.
- Hands-on experience of tools and software useful for analysing and interpreting experimental data e.g., ImageJ, MATLAB, Python.
- Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.
This is a superb opportunity to join a well funded start up with exceptional tech and make a massive contribution to life sciences research for the benefit of humanity.
