The Opportunity

We have a rare opportunity to join our QBE Reinsurance division as a Senior Reserving Manager on a full-time, permanent basis.

Our Actuarial department maintains close working relationships with the Underwriting divisions, and Claims, Reinsurance and Finance in order gain a thorough understanding of the portfolios and their drivers of profitability.

We strive for continuous improvement and are supported by a dedicated combined in-house development team for database and system maintenance and development. This enables us on spending less time processing data and more time on analytical thinking.

Your new role

Heading up the actuarial reserving team for the global QBE Reinsurance division, you'll be responsible for providing actuarial advice to the relevant business units and own relationship with key underwriter, claims and finance representatives.

You'll provide regular reserving advice, input into business planning, reserve variability and business partnering to undertake deep dives into relevant segments of the portfolio as required.

You'll also lead and develop a team of qualified and student actuaries.

Other responsibilities:

  • Awareness and understanding of the business drivers for the function that they are supporting. Ensure the team is aware of the plan and its context to be able to influence and make decisions appropriately.
  • Develop strong relationships across the business.
  • Articulate areas of uncertainty and differentiate between different drivers of results.
  • Actively contribute in all business meetings as required in order to understand and support business requirements.
  • Develop and manage appropriate systems and procedures to ensure accurate data is used and subsequently appropriate analyses produced. This is to include adopting efficient and consistent actuarial models and processes and/or technologies where appropriate.
  • Ensure appropriate checks are performed within processes to minimise inaccuracies subject to materiality threshold. Understand when differences are material.
  • Ensure that processes are aligned with business needs and fit for purpose through liaison with the Functional teams.
  • Networking within wider Actuarial community to stay abreast of best practice. Aware of developments outside of QBE and understand impact of the external environment on QBE's business.
  • Understanding impact of regulatory environment on technical work
  • Manage a team ensuring that the overall output and quality of the service provided by the team is within specified levels.
  • Develop and coach the team so as to ensure the required standards of performance, and support the continuing personal and professional development of all team members increasing their capability and share knowledge and best practice.

About you

  • Qualified Actuary or qualifies by experience
  • Good understanding of industry best practice in actuarial analysis, modelling and underwriting
  • Strong experience in Reserving, ideally within a Reinsurance environment
  • Team Management experience
  • Ability to organise own and team's work to meet deadlines
  • Ability to question established processes and deliver appropriate change
  • Able to set goals for team and self to meet overall corporate objectives
  • Effective communication, able to present and lead discussions
