Job Description
Job Title Lead Emergency First Aider -

Secondary Schools

Hours 32.5 hours per week (30 min unpaid
lunch break daily) term time only + 5
Inset Days + 5 additional days
Salary Pay Range points 10 - 12

Job Purpose
To provide immediate, lifesaving, medical care and assess when to call further medical help.
Oversee the medical provision within school and ensure the appropriate level of supervision.

Main Duties
A first aider's overall aim should be to preserve life by administering immediate first aid to casualties who
are ill or injured and those arising from specific hazards at school; and make appropriate decisions when to
call an ambulance or refer to other medical professionals.

  • Fulfil role as nominated first aid lead.
  • To be responsible for the delivery of assessment and treatment of minor illness and injuries.
  • To deliver care within the boundaries of the role, focusing on student well-being and health

education

  • To refer to individual health care plans for students with medical conditions and treat accordingly.
  • To notify parents of any illness or accidents and treatments provided.
  • To input and update student medical information onto database e.g., SIMS.
  • To administer Rescue Medication when appropriate. This is to be in accordance with Student

Individual Health Care Plan/medical procedures and up to the level of the training received.

  • To replenish and maintenance of first aid equipment/stock, including first aid boxes for school

events (sports day) or trips.

  • To provide accurate, contemporaneous, and complete records of student consultation consistent

with legislation, policies, and procedures.

  • To update and share appropriate student medical conditions information at start of each year.
  • To create or update and evaluate all medical policies and procedures (medical conditions, drug use

etc), communicating with staff and parents

  • To administer an EpiPen injection when appropriate and in accordance with medical procedures and

training qualifications
The first aider should
? Manage the incident and ensure the continuing safety of themselves, bystanders, and the casualty
? Assess casualties and find out the nature and cause of their injuries
? Arrange for further medical help or other emergency services to attend (e.g: the fire or ambulance
service)
? Provide appropriate first aid treatment as trained
? Fill out any internal paperwork as required - Medical Incident Forms - Accident Reports.
? Provide a handover when further medical help arrives or update other attending First Aid staff

Supervision and Management
The jobholder is responsible for overseeing the first aid staff within the academy when appropriate. Other
first aiders will hold primary roles in other areas.
Risk Management

  • To monitor work area and practices to ensure they are safe and free from hazards and conform to

health, safety and security legislation, policies and guidelines.

  • To control storage and administration of medication.
  • To liaise with pastoral team to identify areas of concern and referring vulnerable students to the

appropriate agencies.

  • To maintain an accurate record of accidents and refer on to Health and Safety Team if require

further investigation.

  • To ensure infection control measures are adhered to in line with local and national guidelines.

Decision Making
The jobholder should be able to make decisions about the appropriate procedure to follow whilst always
ensuring their own safety.

Resources
The jobholder is required to use first aid resources with care.
The jobholder is responsible for ensuring stocks of medical equipment are kept up to date and the first aid
kits/rooms fully stocked.

Working Environment
The job may involve some lifting, pulling and stretching. The work could be undertaken indoors or outdoors
depending on where an emergency situation may arise.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications
The jobholder must hold a valid First Aid at Work Certificate or equivalent.
Optional training (provided by the school) may include:

  • Anaphylaxis (Rescue Medication)Training
  • Epilepsy (Buccal Midazolam) Training
  • Diabetes Awareness Training

As a lead First Aider it is recommended to hold an administration of medicine certificate. The job holder
should be able to communicate calmly and effectively under pressure.
Other Duties
The jobholder may be required to perform duties other than those given in the job description. Particular
duties and responsibilities may vary from time to time without changing the overall level of responsibility.
Such variations are a common occurrence and would not justify a re-evaluation of the post. However, in
cases where a permanent and substantial change in duties and responsibilities of a post occurs, consistent
with a higher level of responsibility, then the post would be eligible for re-evaluation.
