Broster Buchanan are delighted to be working in partnership with Uppingham School as they look to appoint a Finance Manager.

Overview

Founded in 1584, today, Uppingham is one of the UK's leading co-educational independent boarding and day schools for pupils aged 13-18 employing circa 550 staff. The teaching staff number 120 and are supported by staff in business units responsible for marketing, admissions, business development, human resources, IT, finance, health and safety, operational services and estates.

The Uppingham Group of Schools also includes Maidwell Hall School in Northamptonshire, which educates pupils from ages 4 to 13, and Uppingham School Enterprises Ltd (Uniform Shop, Sports Centre and external lettings). Uppingham Cairo will open in 2024, with Uppingham Vietnam planned for the following year. The Finance Department of nine staff provides the accounting and payroll function for all the entities in the Group.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Finance Director and working alongside the Financial Controller, this is a broad position that will see you interreacting with a range of stakeholders and maintaining the integrity of the numbers.

Key duties can be summarised as:

  • To maintain and improve financial controls
  • Produce accurate and timely monthly management accounts
  • Termly financial reports, returns and year-end figures for audit
  • Support financial planning and budgeting
  • Investigate variances via stakeholder relationships
  • To manage and direct a team of 4

Suitable applicants

In addition to be able to perform the duties above you will possess:

  • Recognised accounting qualification preferably ACA, ACCA or CIMA
  • Strong IT skills, including MS office products, and in particular Excel spreadsheets, including scrutiny and analysis of data
  • Proven leadership experience in a managerial capacity
  • Personable, supportive and able to motivate and work in a team
  • Ability to work well under pressure and prioritise with a capacity to multi-task efficiently
  • Highly organised and accurate with meticulous attention to details
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and able to report complex financial that is accessible to informed non-finance professionals
