SSEN Transmission's portfolio of projects is currently a £20bn+ investment programme, and to support this delivery we are growing our Customer and Stakeholder Directorate. The Head of Social and Economic Legacy is a new role and will have responsibility for ensuring that SSE's key sustainability principle of sharing the economic value is met through delivery of direct and indirect social and economic benefits across the UK, Scotland, north of Scotland and in local communities. The current lifetime value of the SSEN Transmission Community Benefit funds is expected to be over £150 million when confirmed in summer 2024 and is expected to rise. This includes management of Community Benefit Funds, Housing Legacy and development of Heritage initiatives and assets.

This role reports into the Head of External Engagement.

The responsibilities of the Head of Social and Economic Legacy include:

  • To devise and execute SSEN Transmission's socio-economic benefit strategy, program, and delivery plan, ensuring the business legacy investments demonstrate a significant return on investment for society and stakeholders, through governance, tracking and reporting.
  • Manage the team responsible for all SSEN Transmission community funds, both regional and local, establishing fund criteria to best meet stakeholder needs while ensuring robust governance and transparency. This includes overseeing the allocation of funds, engaging with community stakeholders, and ensuring that the funds are used effectively to benefit the communities involved.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams including procurement, environment, and HR to identify and promote broader socio-economic benefits, including employment, skills development, and Biodiversity Net Gain. Make recommendations to business leaders on market best practices to provide additional legacy benefits from our investments.
  • Establish best practice and policy relating to community benefit, community investment and any other local, regional or national policy that could impact the delivery of the socio-economic benefits in the SSEN Transmission region whilst ensuring awareness of policy changes and other potential socio- economic impacts.
  • Direct the communication and delivery of SSEN Transmission's socio-economic strategy, building strong trusted partnerships cross functionally, with the capability of influencing and developing collaborative partnerships with external organisations in pursuit of common objectives.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of socio-economic development and corporate social responsibility best practices, governance and reporting.
  • In depth experience of working in the energy sector in community development/third sector background with particular awareness of community investment and heritage practices.
  • Strong understanding of the social and economic challenges that face the energy sector currently and in the transition to net zero with a focus on the north of Scotland area.
  • Demonstrable experience of effective influencing and negotiating with senior stakeholders, external bodies, and industry decision makers with an ability to inspire action.
  • Expertise in guiding, nurturing, and coaching a team to foster a positive, inclusive environment that achieves excellent results and performance.
