Software Project Leader (SPL) (Virtualisation & DevOps Team)

Salary: Up to £70,000 depending on experience

Hybrid working pattern: Where possible, we will seek to accommodate a blended approach to on-site and remote working. In this role 4 days per week in the office as a minimum is required due to the secure classification of the work requiring secure network access.

The opportunity:

  • We are looking for a technically minded Software Project Leader with a history of deploying both Virtualised and Containerised systems, to join a small talented team to develop systems for the next generation of advanced missile systems.
  • We're a driven team with a passion for software and its successful deployment in battlespace weapon systems. We work on technology that is at the forefront of European missile system design, delivering safe, secure, and reliable products to our customers.
  • This is a hands-on project management role, supporting the continued design and development Virtual and Container based systems.
  • The work will involve planning and bid estimating, allocating work, tracking progress, working with supplier teams to define system requirements, and resolving current issues including competing demands and conflicts.
  • This role includes involvement in all aspects of the development, integration, delivery into service and service support aspects.
  • Working with cutting edge technologies across a range of land and maritime defence projects, developing solutions to implement virtual technologies to replicate and replace physical hardware.
  • Acting as a role model to both the team and the wider organisation by promoting innovative approaches to delivery whilst ensuring our strong commitment to safe, high-quality code is maintained.
  • Leading research and development into how virtualisation and containerisation can be used in our current and future products.

What we're looking for from you:

  • A passion for software engineering and management, be able to innovate and think critically to solve complex software problems.
  • Software engineering experience with Virtualisation & Containerisation technologies – VMware, and Docker.
  • You will need to be adaptable and creative as this role combines technical team leadership, project management and team building aspects. The software project management and team leading is the largest part of the role but it also requires a strong technical understanding.
  • Experience developing in Python and other languages.
  • Experience with DevOps and/or DevSecOps.
  • Experience working in a continuous integration environment and be familiar with build-processes and tools such as Jenkins and GitLab.
  • A knowledge of networking, TCP/IP would be beneficial and also experience working with Linux, scripting languages and Hypervisors.
  • Comfortable working with a team in a collaborative environment, communicating and contributing to design and implementation decisions, and supporting with integration.
  • Ability to succinctly document working knowledge and processes via Wiki (Confluence).
