Environmental Health Officer (Food Hygiene/health and Safety and Pollution)

Positive Employment is currently recruiting for an Environmental Health Officer for our client local government organisation based in Bristol.

The successful candidate will provide a corporately responsible and accessible Environmental Health service, which delivers legislative enforcement, advice and education to promote and secure an enhanced sustainable and safe environment for the City of Bristol.

There are 2 positions available: One will work undertaking Food Safety Inspections, complaint investigations, Infectious disease Notification investigations.

The other health and Safety and Pollution Control work conducting accident investigations and Pollution complain investigations and Environmental Permitting work.

This is a 6 month starting contract with the possibility to extend. Hybrid working available - 2 days working from home (some flexibility available).

Duties and Responsibilities but not limited to:

  • Survey and inspection of premises, investigation of incidents, accidents and processes, measurement of a variety of environmental factors, and accurately record this data in written or electronic form to enable fully informed decision making with regards to environmental health conditions.
  • Evaluate and appraise collected data assessing and prioritising levels of risk and comparing with standards (current legislation, regulations, codes of practice, good practice guidance, etc.) to establish where there are deficiencies and to determine the most appropriate method of improving environmental health conditions.
  • Use appropriate legal powers in the collection and presentation of evidence, the serving of legal notices or making of orders, seizure of equipment or goods and in pursuing court proceedings, to enforce minimum legal environmental health standards. This includes preparation of prosecution files, interviewing under caution, liaising with Legal and appointed Solicitor/Barrister/Counsel as necessary.
  • Monitor own caseload, working to targets, assessing and reviewing own workload priorities and keeping manager and supervisor informed of progress and any deviation from planned deadlines.

Personal Requirements:

  • Must have the degree/diploma in Environmental Health and be registered with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health or we will not consider them.
  • Detailed experience of the effective delivery of one of the following Environmental Health specialisms: Food safety/Health & safety/Housing/Pollution control, Port Health, Infectious Disease Control.
  • Ability to apply effectively & appropriately in practical situations, theoretical knowledge of Environmental Health.
  • Commitment to and understanding of issues of quality of service, customer focus and equality of access to services.

Working Hours: 09:00am - 17:00pm, Monday - Friday

Pay: £25.98 per hour
