DT Technician

We are currently recruiting for a DT technician to work within a Tower Hamlets secondary school.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and maintain classrooms and workshops, prepare and maintain materials for use by staff and pupils, ensuring that an orderly, safe and healthy environment is provided for teaching activities.
  • Be responsible for creating new risk assessments, updating existing ones to comply with current legislation and guidance.
  • Carry out regular machine /tools inspection and arrange repair/ replacement
  • Test and monitor new equipment or machinery
  • Ensure that Health and Safety requirements and other relevant regulations, such as Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), are adhered to and observed. This may involve undertaking regular checking procedures and risk assessments, as appropriate to the work area
  • Learn/ enhance CAD/CAM skills ( Laser cutter, CNC CAM and 3 D Printer) and demonstrate these skills to pupils.
  • Cutting pupils work on CAM ( Laser/ CNC router)
  • Prepare and assemble teaching resources, apparatus, materials, machinery and equipment for use by staff and pupils
  • Contribute to teaching and learning sessions, as appropriate, by demonstrating or advising on proper and safe use of materials and equipment for practical activities, including directed support for individuals
  • Providing technical support in lessons with all key stages (all DT subject areas)
  • Working with small group of pupils to support them with their practical work
  • Maintain and undertake basic repairs to equipment where practical to do so (including textile subject area)
  • Support catch-up sessions after school.
  • Running a DT related club to promote the subject.`
  • Supporting staff with ordering materials, equipment and resources
  • Replacements of consumables (soap, hand towels etc)
  • Maintain the storing and displaying of resources and student work.

Carry out a range of administration duties including: preparing cover work, teaching materials and booklets

  • To assist with practical examinations as may be required;
  • Creating and maintaining displays to promote Design and Technology
  • Daily checking of PC/ Laptops and report any issue related to these to HOD and IT
  • Clean workshop tables, equipment, and keep the department and its equipment running at optimum efficiency and cleanliness
  • Be responsible for the safe storage of equipment and materials, and the disposal of waste products in accordance with the relevant regulations, guidelines and school procedures
  • Liaising with other departments /schools to promote Design and Technology subject areas
  • Keep record of departmental spending and inform HOD
  • Be responsible for maintaining stock and ordering equipment and supplies
  • Maintain an inventory of workshop equipment
  • Distribution of stationery items to staff and classrooms
  • Assist with the issue and return of textbooks or other teaching aids
  • Attend training as and when required.
  • Undertake such other duties as may be required from time to time commensurate with the level of the post. The particular duties and responsibilities attached to the post may vary from time to time without changing the general character of the duties or the level of responsibility entailed.
  • Have a commitment to Child safeguarding, to promoting the welfare of children and young people in accordance with the school's agreed procedure.

Ideal person

Qualifications

  • Hold a recognised qualification at NVQ level 3 or equivalent experience in Technology or Design;
  • Health and Safety certificate is desirable;
  • First aid qualification desirable
  • Knowledge of CLEAPS guidelines;
  • Experience in relevant discipline or related qualification;
  • Willingness to work flexibly when required.

Experience

  • Experience of working in a school or with young people desirable;
  • Experience of working in the Technology industry and the use and maintenance of machinery such as drills, saws and lathes and hand tools;
  • Have knowledge of Health & Safety regulations/procedures.

Knowledge

  • Understanding health, safety and welfare regulations and best practice;
  • Knowledge of particular subject/technical area;
  • Knowledge of relevant policies/codes of practice/legislation;
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work jointly with colleagues
