Accounts Assistant

Role Overview

The role forms part of a small Group Finance team. The Assistant Accountant reports to the PLC Finance Manager and works closely with the Assistant Management Accountant, Treasury Accountant and the remainder of the Group Finance team.

The Accounts Assistant and Assistant Management Accountant are both responsible for the financial management of the Group's head office entities, which primarily hold the group function cost centres, group treasury function activity and various other smaller holding companies.

The individual should be adaptable, quick to pick up new concepts, able to prioritize and manage workload and eager to understand the activities that are going on in each head office entity. They should be comfortable with using Microsoft Excel, ideally have experience of using finance systems but this is not a necessity (Microsoft D365 is the system used by the team), has good attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently. Previous experience working in a finance department is desirable, but we are open to individuals with alternative work experience. Study support can be provided if the individual wishes to obtain an accountancy qualification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Assistant Management Accountant with the head office entities accounting:

- ongoing general ledger maintenance, including journal postings
- assisting with monthly management accounts preparation for small head office entities
- monthly nominal account reconciliations, including bank reconciliations, accruals and prepayments schedules for small head office entities
- annual budgeting for small head office entities
- re-forecasting 3 times a year for small head office entities
- assist in the year end and interim group reporting requirements and dealing with queries from external auditors
- setting up ad hoc payment requests on Barclays banking system, independently verifying bank account details, ensuring payments adhere to group payment policy and diligent filing of support for these payments
- management of intercompany transactions – invoicing, reconciliations, cash settlement, ledger settlements
- assisting the shared services finance function in Cambridge with bank postings
- ledger settlements of control accounts, assisting with resolution of unreconciled balances

  • Preparation of monthly VAT report for the head office entities and collation of the UK Group VAT report
  • Various office tasks, including distribution of post to the group finance team

In addition to the tasks described above, the job holder may be required to carry out other duties as may reasonably be required from time to time.
