Job role overview:

  • Heading up of a team of engineers responsible for the introduction of new models into production you will be based within the machine shop team and focused on Crankshaft production.
  • You will support day to day production overcoming any engineering issues that may arise.
  • In the development phases you will work with design for new model introduction, offering advice as to what can be practically achieved and highlighting any cost or cycle time implications of new proposals.
  • Leading up to volume production you will be responsible for prototype production builds, defining machining processes and component flow. Process sheets and stage drawings are an integral part of the role being the foundation for Quality in production.
  • There is a focus on continuous improvement, specifically in cycle time but also including quality, tool life and energy consumption.
  • You will procure new machinery and equipment as well as designing bespoke component fixtures for use online. Managing the procurement cycle for jigs and equipment is a key part of the role, whether this be through our in-house machining and additive manufacture facilities or our external partners.
  • Safety comes first and you will be responsible for ensuring machinery and processes are safe and will carry out risk assessments as required.
  • In the latter stages of implementation, you will train online staff and liaise with Project management and quality to resolve outstanding issues being guided by a no-fault forward approach.
  • The role requires an adept communicator comfortable negotiating with other stakeholders at all levels of the business.
  • Production is the key objective, meaning flexibility is a must and although rare, this can mean working evenings, weekends and bank holidays can be required as part of paid overtime as business needs dictate.
  • You must have an engineering and machining background to be considered for this role.
  • This is hybrid role part office based and part hands on. It will suit a proactive engineer who wants to see problems first hand and work on the shop floor with the wider team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the implementation of new workpieces from cradle to grave.
  • Provide current support to Crankshaft production lines assisting with breakdowns and change over activities.
  • Consult with design over new models and advise on design for manufacture.
  • CNC machine programming on a wide range of processes to include;
  • Turning- Milling
  • Grinding
  • Gear cutting
  • Polishing
  • Robot deburr
  • Writing a specification
  • Obtaining quotations and negotiating with different suppliers
  • Creating a justification or business case to procure the machinery.
  • Setting out quality requirements and pass off criteria
  • Performing pre and final acceptance, signing off the asset for production.
  • Use Autocad to produce process sheets.
  • Create and update routing information.
  • Maintain tool set packs and assign minimum stock levels.
  • Conduct risk assessments for machinery and processes on the crankshaft lines.
  • Identify features which need to be inspected, which inspection equipment should be used and frequency of checks.
  • Interpret inspection results and apply containment and corrective actions where necessary.
