Baby Feeding Specialist

We are currently recruiting for a Baby Feeding Specialist on behalf of our public sector client based in East London.

This is a temporary contract initially for 3 months with view for further extension thereafter. The role is paying £20.27 per hour PAYE or £25.92 per hour Umbrella.

  • To provide information, encouragement and practical assistance to all pregnant women (antenatal clinics within Tower Hamlets) and new mothers (on the postnatal ward at the Royal London Hospital) about the benefits of breastfeeding and relationship building, how to get breastfeeding off to a good start and the support that will be available after the birth. This will include offering information and support to families choosing to bottle-feed their baby and providing guidance on introducing solid foods
  • To deliver a mixture of individual and group interventions with expectant mothers/partners and babies in multiple locations (in the home, at Family Hub Centres etc). The postholder will manage the booking system to ensure promotion of the service, for universal and targeted support such as: colostrum harvesting workshops, antenatal and postnatal support groups and targeted support
  • To provide interventions with feeding plans where necessary. This may include setting up lactation aids, Finger Feeding aids, cup/syringe feeding equipment and setting up breast pumps
  • To ensure timely identification, signposting and referrals are made to specialist services to prevent a delay in support, i.e., refer mothers with complex breastfeeding concerns or when the baby has difficulty due to tongue-tie to the health professionals (Tongue-tie clinic)
  • To attend GP practices or other agencies to deliver Breastfeeding information to medical students and others. To respond to antenatal referrals made by the Gateway team, FNP, Midwives, Paediatrics and others in community settings
  • Responsible for disseminating and communicate effectively with women to cater to the specific needs of diverse audiences
  • Ensure that the highest standards of confidentiality are maintained including information (verbally or in writing) and reporting on work undertake in accordance with the Council's procedure on data protection
  • To provide information and support for families who choose to bottle feed their bay. To provide information and signpost around introducing solid foods to baby
  • Identify safeguarding concerns, take action where appropriate and escalate via the designated safeguarding lead when necessary
  • Align all communications with relevant legislation, policies and procedures to ensure that information conveyed adheres to established UNICEF Baby Friendly standards and guidelines

Key knowledge/skills required:

  • Recognised qualification in Breastfeeding Support, e.g., Breastfeeding Network Supporter, NCT Counsellor, training in Breastfeeding, Helpers/Supporters Course
  • Infant Massage Instructor
  • Substantial working or volunteering, paid or unpaid, supporting parents with feeding their babies in a hospital, home or community centre
  • Knowledge of how breastfeeding works and how to support mothers effectively
  • Knowledge of Baby Friendly Initiative
  • Ability to work across a variety of cultures, recognising and being sensitive to differing cultural norms and expectations
  • Ability to work in a confidential way respecting the families' right to privacy, whilst remaining aware and alert to child protection issues and procedures
  • Ability to develop and good working relationships with a wide range of professionals, including midwives, health visitors and dietitians
  • Ability to work alongside families in their own home, whilst working from a central base in Tower Hamlets
