Senior Accountant (construction sector)

We represent a client in the construction sector specializing in large-scale engineering projects. With 28 years of industry experience and a continued trajectory of growth, the company is on track to increase its turnover from £27 million to £37 million within the next 12 months. As part of this expansion, they are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Accountant to join their team.

Job Summary:

Our client's accounting principles are currently outdated and heavily reliant on manual processes, which have not kept pace with the company's rapid growth. The incoming Accountant will be tasked with helping modernize and streamline financial operations, ensuring that monthly management accounts are delivered accurately and on time. This role offers significant career development opportunities, with the successful candidate being positioned as a potential future Head of Finance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Reporting: Help prepare monthly management accounts on time.
  • Project Accounting: Help manage financial aspects of construction projects, including job costing. Monitor project budgets and provide regular updates to senior management.
  • Accounts Payable/Receivable: Assist with accounts payable and receivable processes, ensuring timely payments to vendors and accurate invoicing to clients.
  • Compliance: Help ensure compliance with relevant HMRC filing, financial regulations, and internal controls.
  • Cash Flow Management: Help monitor and manage company cash flow to ensure adequate liquidity for ongoing projects and operations.
  • Audit Preparation: Help prepare for and assist with internal and external audits, ensuring all financial records are accurate and complete.
  • Software Management: Keep Sage 50 up to date and work towards enhancing the company's systems.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.

Requirements:

  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience, in the construction or a linked industry, alternatively private practice with a high volume of construction clients.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software. Sage 50 being ideal.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of construction accounting principles, including job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
  • Sector experience: CIS and ideally some knowledge of IR35.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
