Robertson Bell are excited to announce their partnership with this established public sector organisation as they go to market for a Payroll and Pension Specialist on a permanent basis. Reporting to the Head of Finance, this role will give you the opportunity to hold oversight of a large payroll and lead a team of two driven direct reports.

In this role you will:

  • Provide essential oversight of the payroll for over 1000 employees and ensure all deadlines are met.
  • Manage and supervise two payroll administrators, conducting weekly meetings, allocating workloads, and ensuring they meet all deadlines.
  • Oversee the monthly payroll process for organisation, including the defined contribution pension schemes, finalising payroll, and handling SPF files and RTI to ensure proper controls and reconciliations.
  • Prepare and review net pay variance reports, manage sick leave processes, and provide oversight on pension updates, involving occasional hands-on management of sickness-related payroll tasks.

Based in Gloucester, this opportunity offers a flexible working pattern and boasts a great working environment! The successful candidate will benefit from a competitive pension and an initial annual leave allowance of 30 days, in addition to eight statutory bank holidays.

  • Possess a payroll qualification or AAT certification, or be qualified by experience (QBE), with a background in the public sector, education, or not-for-profit organizations.
  • Have strong understanding of pension regulations and administration, including handling starters and leavers; ideally with defined benefit scheme experience.
  • Hold recent payroll experience at a supervisory or management level, overseeing a payroll function, with reconciliation skills.
  • Have proven experience leading a payroll of 800+ people and managing conflicting interests and deadlines.
  • Are a clear and concise communicator.
