Principal Accountant

Macildowie are delighted to be working with a fantastic local authority in Nottinghamshire who are seeking a dedicated and experienced General Fund Accountant to join their Financial Services team. This pivotal role requires a proactive individual who can effectively manage a small team, promote best financial practices, and ensure compliance with the Council's Constitution and professional standards. If you have a keen eye for detail, exceptional financial acumen, and a keen interest in working within a great authority then we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to;

  • Employee Management: Effectively manage and develop assigned employees, ensuring performance aligns with corporate protocols.
  • Final Accounts Preparation: Prepare final accounts for allocated directorates and assist in the preparation of the authority's final accounts as needed.
  • Budget Preparation: Prepare budgets for allocated directorates and contribute to the authority's overall budget preparation.
  • Financial Planning: Support corporate financial planning, focusing on the Medium Term Financial Strategy and the 30-year Housing Revenue Account Business Plan.
  • Revenue Financial Modelling: Conduct robust financial modelling and option appraisals, coordinating with the Capital Accountant for capital implications.
  • Revenue Management Accounts: Prepare, report, and present monthly revenue management accounts, including forecasts and commentary.
  • Comprehensive Financial Services: Provide a full financial service to allocated directorates and brief the Financial Services Manager on emerging issues.
  • System Management: Manage and maintain financial systems, recommending and implementing improvements as needed.
  • VAT Advice: Provide VAT technical advice, ensuring compliance with HMRC requirements.
  • Leaseholder Statements: Oversee the production of annual leaseholder statements and address related enquiries or disputes.
  • Purchase Ordering and Creditors Function: Manage this function and ensure compliance with CIS requirements.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare financial reports for Members or management as directed.
  • Corporate Working Groups: Lead or participate in corporate working groups and meetings with partners and external bodies.
  • Business Plan Development: Contribute to the development, implementation, and review of the section's business plan to achieve performance targets.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Relevant professional accounting qualifications (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA) or qualified by experience with demonstrable experience within local government or the wider public sector.
  • Proven experience in a similar financial role, preferably within the public sector.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills.
  • Proficiency in financial modelling and use of financial systems.
