  • Working Pattern: 7-day rota, shifts between 6:00am and 7:00pm
  • Salary: £12.65 per hour

Join our Economy and Infrastructure Service team as an Assistant Market Officer, where you will play a crucial role in maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming environments at Kirklees Markets. This front-line customer service position is physically demanding and involves a variety of tasks including cleaning, maintenance, security, and customer interaction across various market locations.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of market areas, including public toilets.
  • Erect and dismantle market stalls, ensuring timely and safe setup.
  • Carry out basic repairs such as replacing locks, bulbs, and fuses.
  • Conduct building security tasks including unlocking/locking and managing alarm systems.
  • Collect rental payments using chip and pin devices and online systems.
  • Record and process sub-meter electricity data for billing.
  • Liaise directly with traders and market users, distributing and collecting information.
  • Support market events and themed markets through team collaboration.
  • Promote and implement proactive recycling in line with environmental policies.
  • Travel across Kirklees using council vehicles, including towing trailers.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (essential due to early starts and lack of public transport).
  • Physically fit and capable of heavy manual handling.
  • Willingness to clean public toilets and handle biological hazards (Hepatitis B vaccinations provided).
  • Experience or willingness to work in cleaning, security, and health and safety roles.
  • Ability to use handheld technology for payments and data collection.
  • Understanding of security systems and procedures.
  • Must own steel toe-capped boots with ankle support (uniform provided).
  • Willing to undertake medical screening and occupational health assessments.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Experience in market operations, cleaning, or maintenance roles.
  • Knowledge of COSHH and current Health and Safety legislation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Positive attitude, respectful, flexible, and communicative.
  • Commitment to customer service and community engagement.
