Mechanical Design Engineer

  • Pay rate - £55 - £65 p/h (inside IR35)
  • Hybrid working – 3 days based in Derby, 2 days remote working

Our client are a leading engineering and design consultancy who are seeking a Nuclear Engineer with a strong background in the nuclear industry to join their team based in Derby.

Their business currently supports several key nuclear programmes including the UK Submarine programme, the existing nuclear generation fleet, decommissioning and high integrity structures for new nuclear establishments. The team are also increasing support to a range of exciting Civil Nuclear new build projects such as the UK SMR programme.

As a Nuclear Engineer you will deliver projects, be part of teams and programmes, or work directly for our clients embedded into their major programmes.

Responsibilities include:

  • You will proactively support technical aspects of project delivery, including forecasting, change management, risk management and reporting on project progress. You will be accountable for instilling client confidence in the technical delivery through your professionalism and care.
  • Producing and checking of calculations
  • Authoring technical documents
  • Supporting bidding activities in line with client QA process.
  • Support the development, implementation and sharing of best practice through the engineering community and our formal recoding systems.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Working towards or achieved Chartered Engineer status
  • Nuclear sector experience of engineering (design, analysis, technical substantiation).
  • Delivery of technical projects and services.
  • Nuclear industry knowledge and safety case appreciation
  • Familiar with working to design codes and industry standards appropriate for a safety critical industry (ASME, Eurocodes, BS EN13001, RCC-M etc)
  • High integrity mechanical handling equipment (Nuclear de-fuelling/fuelling/waste manoeuvring etc.)
  • Delivery of technically compliant design deliverables in accordance with the input requirements
  • Production and checking of designs and calculations to demonstrate acceptable performance or identify design issues
  • Production of key technical documentation – Calculations, Design reports etc
  • You will have produced designs and calculations to demonstrate acceptable performance and authored key technical documentation. You are comfortable working in new and changing environments and have a desire to be challenged and contribute to the success of the business.
  • You are comfortable liaising with, and influencing, your stakeholders at all levels both internally and externally. You will have a proven track record of working effectively as part of a project team.
  • You will be used to / comfortable with supporting our Quality Assurance process through review or checking colleagues' work and presenting your findings / work to clients.
  • Your experience will be throughout the complete project lifecycle. You'll have direct experience of applying a range of engineering principles and skills to deliver successful project outcomes, with specific examples of working on technical challenges, and, direct accountability for quality and technical performance of engineering projects.
  • Have mechanical experience including calculations, design reports, DFMEAs, FMEAs, tolerance stack ups & drawing experience (although note that the role will not involve physically updating the drawings but requesting changes which will be undertaken by the drawing office).
