Temporary Building Services Engineering Supervisor/ Manager (3-Month Contract)

Reports To: Estates Engineering Manager

Duration: 3-Month Contract

Role Summary

Venn Group have been exclusively approached to recruit for The University of Derby's Estate and Facilities department for an exciting new opportunity!

This temporary role offers a unique opportunity for a skilled Building Services Engineering Supervisor (looking to take a step up) or a current Building Services Manager to make an immediate impact on the university's facilities operations.

For three months and handover period, you'll play a key role in developing and optimising our state-of-the-art Building Management System (BMS), enhancing energy efficiency, and supporting statutory compliance across campus.

Working closely with the Estates team, you'll contribute to maintaining and developing "smart" building integrations while managing essential building services systems.

Key Responsibilities

  1. BMS Operations: Take full ownership of the University's BMS, performing inspections, diagnosing issues, and generating reports to keep systems running efficiently
  2. Energy Optimisation: Identify and execute quick-win strategies for energy savings and cost reductions, ensuring the best possible performance from HVAC and mechanical systems
  3. Compliance & Safety: Uphold compliance with statutory regulations, conducting audits and managing safe systems of work across sites
  4. Maintenance Oversight: Coordinate and log both preventive and reactive maintenance using CAFM, arranging contractor access and scheduling work for seamless execution
  5. Smart Building Integration: Support new "smart" building initiatives, overseeing BMS integration for maximum functionality and energy efficiency
  6. Team Support & Training: Provide high-level training and support for the Engineering team, sharing insights and technical expertise
  7. Risk Management: Serve as an authorised person for high-risk permit-to-work activities, ensuring safety and compliance on all tasks.

Person Specification/Essential Qualifications:

  • Degree or equivalent in Building Services Engineering or a related discipline (Mechanical bias preferred)
  • Relevant BMS or facilities certifications (e.g., City & Guilds in Mechanical Trade, IOSH, NEBOSH)
  • Experience with BMS systems, preferably Schneider, and HVAC maintenance across large, multi-site facilities
  • Skilled in developing and implementing energy-saving initiatives in building services
  • Strong knowledge of compliance standards and safety protocol skills
  • Proficient with CAFM systems and Microsoft Office
  • Effective communicator with excellent planning and organisational abilities

  • Valid UK driver's license and flexibility to travel between sites
  • Availability for emergency callouts and flexible working hours as needed
