Contract Mechanical Design Engineer - Atomic Weapons

Role: Mechanical Design Engineer Type: Temporary, Contract, Freelance, On-Site, 9-Day Fortnight. Location: Aldermaston, Berkshire.
Rate: £50-£100 (negotiable, umbrella PAYE only): Contractors considered based on the competitiveness of their rate relative to expertise.

AWE - Atomic Weapons Establishment

Synopsis: This role is available to Mechanical Design Engineers, to provide mechanical design expertise for relevant components of the nuclear deterrent. Preference is given to those with experience in a nuclear deterrent environment.

Vetting Level: A, DV Clearance.

Role: Provide mechanical designs for the Facility Design Authority (FDA) such that utilities, infrastructure, engineering processes, equipment and facilities are compliant with legislation, standards and requirements associated with engineering design throughout the facility lifecycle.

Key Accountabilities

  • Deliver mechanical designs that meet safety and performance requirements.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of relevant legislative documentation / standards associated with mechanical design engineering.
  • Application of knowledge to confirm designs are prepared which comply with relevant legislation, standards and requirements.
  • Maintain and promote high personal standards in environment, safety, health, security and quality, and be a great team player.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver mechanical engineering designs that address defined requirements, across the full engineering lifecycle, to a high standard.
  • Ensure the design intent is maintained throughout the lifecycle, liaising with other discipline areas to ensure overall design intent is maintained.
  • Ensure compliance with Company Assurance Environment, Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q) and statutory requirements.
  • Ensure application of standards is proportionate and that engineering best practice is adopted.
  • Elevate areas of concern to the relevant Principal Engineer.

Essential Skills:

Working knowledge of legislation and standards applicable to mechanical engineering design. Competent in standard office software, and engineering tools and applications.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of legislation and standards associated with nuclear and / or high hazard facilities.
  • Experience of working in a highly regulated environment (preferably nuclear and / or explosives).

Regulatory Requirements: Able to work on a nuclear licensed site, and have the full right to work in the UK.
