Job Role

The Principal Planning Policy Officer will play a critical role in supporting Enfield Council as it advances the Local Plan through its Examination in Public (EiP) and beyond. This senior-level position is essential to ensure that the Council meets its statutory obligations in preparing, consulting on, and delivering robust planning policies that shape the future development of the borough.

As Enfield moves through the EiP phase, the role will be pivotal in providing high-level policy input, managing the Council's engagement with the Planning Inspectorate, and responding to the complex and evolving requirements of the examination process. The Principal Planning Policy Officer will be responsible for preparing technical evidence, supporting Statements of Common Ground, and liaising with key stakeholders, including the Planning Inspectorate, government agencies, and the local community.

This position will provide leadership within the Strategic Planning and Design team, guiding junior officers and ensuring the Council's planning policies align with national and regional planning frameworks. The postholder will also ensure the delivery of sustainable development outcomes, in line with Enfield's vision for growth, re-wilding, housing provision, and infrastructure delivery.

Given the high stakes of the Local Plan and its significance for the future of Enfield, securing a Principal Planning Policy Officer is a strategic necessity to navigate the complexities of the Examination in Public and to continue the development of sound planning policies that will shape the borough's long-term future.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing high-level policy advice and expertise on complex planning issues related to the Local Plan.
  • Leading the Council's response and representation at the Examination in Public, including preparation of evidence and statements.
  • Managing consultation processes and engagement with key stakeholders, including the Planning Inspectorate, public agencies, and local communities.
  • Ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, regional and national planning policies, and guiding the Council through the EiP process.
  • Leading a team of officers in the delivery of the Local Plan, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and alignment with Council objectives.
