Underwriting Engagement Manager

The role

We are seeking an individual to take on a unique opportunity to support the UK's largest terrorism reinsurer, working closely with the government to enhance resilience in the UK economy.

In this role, you will be responsible for active member engagement, requiring strong relationship-building skills. A solid understanding of the UK commercial insurance market or property reinsurance is essential to effectively address technical queries.

Key accountabilities

To be a focal point of the underwriting team for Terrorism issues in general, including:

  • To manage and respond to enquiries from Members and others regarding the

application of the scheme, underwriting policy, the reinsurance agreements, scheme guide and other matters relating to the technical handling of Terrorism Cover, providing a timely, professional and efficient response.

  • To plan visits and conduct Member Engagement in order to build relationships, and understanding of the Member and enhance Member compliance with the terms of the Reinsurance Agreement and related undertakings including:

  • Maintaining the agreed standards of format, content and timescale for the production of minutes / notes following member engagement.

  • In the event of Member's noncompliance with scheme rules, making written recommendations for improvements to a Members procedures and following up as necessary.

  • To identify trends and concerns which may arise out of Members' engagements and enquiries and recommend appropriate changes to the Scheme's arrangements.

  • To support the Head of Underwriting in the Treaty annual renewal process. To assist in collating Member information and the presentation and negotiation of renewal terms with Members.

  • To work with the Head of Exposure Management in the implementation of the annual exercise for the declaration of Members exposures and to collaborate with the Exposure Management team.

  • To support the finance team with the collection of premium.

  • To support the dissemination of knowledge & education within the Membership.

  • To actively participate in raising the profile of the Scheme's propositions for example by participating in the production of the Spotlight information bulletin and other publications.

  • When required, to assist in the processing of claims arising under the scheme, and to undertake Underwriting Audits following receipt of a claim.

  • When required, to provide information for, attend and report to, the Executive and Advisory Committees.

  • Maintaining an awareness of Parliamentary, legal and insurance market changes likely to impact on the relationship of with its Members and to recommend any changes to the Scheme arrangements which may be appropriate as a result of those changes.

  • Maintain liaison with market bodies such as ABI, BIBA and AIRMIC, disseminating relevant changes and points of interest.

  • Regularly reviewing the availability of insurance and reinsurance for Terrorism risks from other providers and considering the impact of that activity on, or the potential benefit to, the Scheme's operations.

  • Comparing the operation of the Scheme with other Terrorism related schemes worldwide to ensure best practice in operations.

  • To contribute to the completion of ad hoc projects as required.

Skills & experience

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES:

  • An experienced and professional underwriter, possessing the appropriate professional qualifications and with a good reputation in the insurance industry
  • To have an in depth technical knowledge of Property and Business Interruption wordings for commercial companies and a good understanding of the legal and other practices pertaining to that market
  • To possess a good working knowledge of the technical control of Property and Business Interruption claims for commercial companies
  • To be able to work within a small team, setting and achieving goals and objectives, working efficiently to agreed timetables
  • To be persuasive and influential with an ability to represent in a positive and knowledgeable way, developing and maintaining the awareness of Members and their subcontractors of their responsibilities both pre and post event
  • To be able to represent communicating with Market Associations and the outside community in general in an authoritative, positive and knowledgeable way
  • Excellent communication skills, with ability to communicate well one-to-one and within larger groups.
  • An ability to work well as part of a team using a collaborative and professional approach and to operate well under pressure, able to work efficiently to agreed timescales.
  • Have the ability to work independently and take decisions (but knowing when to seek guidance) and deliver to deadlines
  • Housekeeping - the ability to consistently keep records, documenting discussions in a timely manner and circulate as appropriate
  • To be literate and numerate and fully competent with Microsoft Office Excel and Word applications and other relevant IT systems

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Educated to A Level or Degree Level and/or holding the ACII or FCII qualification
  • Evidence of further CPD and/or additional qualifications relating to the insurance industry.

EXPERIENCE:

  • In depth experience working in a similar capacity in the UK insurance industry and within the UK commercial insurance sector.
