Pathology Curation Support

Service Care Solutions are working with our established client to recruit Pathology Curation Support to assist The Laboratory Team in the Surrey area. The successful candidate will primarily work and provide support to our research team in the curation and analysis of fungal and bacterial cultures, ensuring accurate identification, validation, and storage of samples critical to our projects

The contract duration is for 6 months with the likelihood of extension. This is a full-time placement with 37.5 hours available. Part-time applications of 3 Days or more will also be considered.

Shifts: Monday to Friday, 09:00 - 17:00

Location: Surrey

Pay: £16.00 p/h LTD

Bonus: £150 Sign-Up Bonus

Job Purpose - Pathology Curation Support

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Establishing a Centralised Culture Curation Facility:
  • Assist in setting up and maintaining a centralised facility for the curation of fungal and bacterial cultures.
  1. Culture Examination and Support:
  • Provide support in the examination of bacterial and fungal cultures isolated from samples analysed or part of research projects.

  • Apply classical morphological and molecular techniques for the identification of isolates.

  1. Validation and Identification:
  • Validate cultures within existing collections using both morphological and molecular techniques.

  • Perform basic bioinformatics processing of sequence reads, BLAST analysis, and construct phylogenetic trees of various species and taxa.

  1. Improving Culture Storage Facilities:
  • Contribute to enhancing the current culture storage facilities within the organisation.
  1. Data Management:
  • Capture and manage metadata accurately and comprehensively within a defined data management system.
  1. Scientific Interpretation and Publication:
  • Interpret biological data and collaborate in writing scientific and technical publications.
  1. Knowledge Exchange:
  • Present research findings to various audiences to facilitate knowledge exchange.
  1. Laboratory Operations:
  • Assist in ensuring the smooth operation of laboratory facilities.

  • Write and review Standard Operating Procedures and contribute to future laboratory accreditation processes.

  1. Broader Contribution:
  • Participate in the wider activities of the research team and fulfil professional duties as required.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A degree in plant biological sciences, microbiology, or biochemistry
  • Experience using molecular techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, DNA clean-up and quantification, and DNA-based diagnostics.
  • Skills in general bacterial and fungal culturing and storage methods.
  • Skills in bacterial and fungal identification.
