We have a fantastic opportunity for four Assistant Cemetery Operatives at Wigan Council. This is a full-time temporary role for the next 2 months, with the possibility of extension.

What is the role?

Wigan Council are looking for four Assistant Cemetery Operatives, to cover 9 cemeteries across the borough of Wigan. Assisting other members of staff, to complete all tasks required at the cemetery.

What are your responsibilities?

  • To be accountable for the preparation, presentation, and backfilling of graves in line with policy and procedures by using appropriate plant and equipment
  • Take pride in all you do to present all cemeteries grounds to a high standard including grass cutting, hedge cutting, weed killing, planting, bin emptying, litter/leaf collection, floral tribute management and site security
  • Empowered to carry out maintenance to achieve expected presentation in all cemetery grounds including lift and level procedures to maintain a level ground
  • Accountable for compliance with all relevant legislation and with local rules and regulations
  • Assist the Cemeteries Team Leader in planning new memorialisation, locating graves by using plans and electronic information and to manage floral tributes
  • Carry out burials, burial/scattering of cremated remains and exhumations with dignity and sensitivity to families dealing with bereavement
  • Be courageous in the enforcement of memorial rules and regulations and be open to new ways of working
  • Remove/re-fix grave kerbstones, headstones and concrete foundations as required and in line with approved procedures
  • Undertake site inspection including headstones management, record results and report defects or any health & safety issues
  • Be available to cover for other colleagues in the service including crematorium and office duties.

What skills do you Need?

  • Ideally to have Assistant Cemetery Operative experience.
  • Excellent People skills, as you will be speaking to the public, other members of staff and senior managers.
  • Must be physically fit and health, as there will be lots of lifting and working outside.
  • Must be an excellent team worker.
  • You will be working across 9 different cemeteries within the borough, so would be beneficial to have a full uk driving licence and access to a vehicle to get to all locations easily.
  • Some Admin experience may also be required for the role
  • Working Hours Monday to Friday 8.00am - 16.00pm, to total 37 hours a week
