Ranger

Posted by National Trust.

Summary

As a Ranger, you're a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you'll play a crucial role in keeping the nation's beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.

You should be willing to work some weekends, bank holidays and evenings, and be on call.

What it's like to work here

Reporting to the Countryside Manager, you'll work with volunteers at Ormesby and Rievaulx with support from your manager and the Senior Gardener Rievaulx. You'll have opportunities to work with the team based out of Ormesby including an Area Ranger and two rangers as well as a team based on the Yorkshire Coast including Area Ranger and ranger.

Nestled in Middlesbrough is the green oasis of Ormesby Hall, once home to the Pennyman family. This classic Georgian mansion, surrounded by 250 acres of parkland, woodland and farmland, is looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and creative individual to create and lead a new Ranger volunteer team by participating with our local community.

What you'll be doing

Ensuring the protection and care of our woodland and estate including habitats, wildlife, property and machinery, your enthusiasm will inspire others to love this beautiful place as much as you do. You'll develop the wider estate back to the important wildlife conservation area and greenspace it is, sitting within a challenging urban environment. You'll instil this importance in the community and work to encourage people to use this beautiful asset in their community for the right reasons. You'll be instrumental in delivering parts of Rievaulx's Conservation Management Plan working closely with the existing garden team under direction of the Senior Gardener and play a large part in the creation and delivery of Ormesby's Estate Management, Woodland Management and Conservation Management Plans.

You'll make sure that we're delivering outstanding outdoors experiences and excellent conservation work as the sole Ranger in the outdoors team. Volunteering, Participation & Community Involvement is at the heart of all we do. We're keen to encourage skills development across a variety of engagement opportunities. You'll be a confident leader, be great at making relationships with our community, and create fantastic participation opportunities for Ormesby and its community. You could be maintaining our woodland and green space, assisting with events or activities through to delivering a wide range of engaging visitor experiences.

Working alongside a dedicated property team, you'll work collaboratively to aid the fast paced development of the visitor experience offer through high standards of service and presentation. You'll be involved with outdoor activities, events and seasonal programming to bring repeat visitors to this urban property and engage with visitors. You'll also share and promote the work that we do, ensuring special places like these are here to be both protected and enjoyed by everyone for ever. This will see you responding to queries and explaining the value of the work being undertaken.

Who we're looking for

We'd love to hear from you if you're:

  • practically experienced in conservation work, to protect and improve habitats and landscapes
  • happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you're doing, and why it matters
  • hard-working and willing to learn
  • able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines
  • experienced in managing land, access and conservation, and working outdoors
  • able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates
