Assistant Transfer Station Manager

We are seeking an Assistant Transfer Station Manager to work closely with the Technical Transfer Station Manager in the day-to-day management of the Transfer Station. This role is ideal for a methodical, organised individual who is calm under pressure and has a strong background in waste management, particularly with hazardous materials.

Day to Day of the role:

  • Ensure site operations comply with the site licence, working plan, UK legislation, and standard operating procedures.
  • Review and update SOPs and Risk Assessments as required.
  • Allocate workloads for operators to maintain the movement of waste through the site, including organising waste removal.
  • Conduct ‘on the job' training for new chemists and operators.
  • Manage operators, contractors, and visitors on site in accordance with company procedures and UK legislation.
  • Assist with the administration of maintenance programmes and liaise with external contractors.
  • Assist with the purchase of work equipment and consumables, ensuring competitive quotations and timely payment of invoices.
  • Support the Technical Transfer Station Manager with duty-of-care visits to third-party disposal sites.
  • Participate in the selection and recruitment of staff.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Degree in Chemistry or a Chemistry/Environmental-related discipline.
  • Minimum of five years' experience at a waste management facility dealing with hazardous chemicals in a team lead/supervisor or manager role.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Ideally, COTC Level 4 – Managing Transfer or Treatment Operations.
  • Understanding of all current UK legislation associated with the waste industry.
  • Excellent communication skills and strong leadership abilities.
  • Ability to work within precise deadlines and under pressure.
  • Knowledge of best available techniques and alternative waste disposal options.
  • Flexibility towards working hours to ensure smooth operation of the Technical Transfer Station.
