Overview:

First Military Recruitment are currently seeking an Estates Technician on behalf of one of our clients.

This is an all-year round appointment based on a 40-hour working week Monday to Friday with an hour unpaid lunch break. The Estates Department is open from 0700 – 2230 and a shift system is in place to cover these hours.

Weekend work will be required in an addition to the weekday hours on a rota basis, days off will be given during the week for weekend working. Currently the weekend rota is one weekend in five, although this may be subject to change over time. Weekend working hours will be 0830 – 1730 with a one-hour lunch break.

Duties and Responsibilities for the Handyman:

  • The Estates Department provides a wide, diverse range, of support services to the school, encompassing, but not limited to:
  • In-house buildings maintenance including plumbing, electrical, carpentry and decorative maintenance.
  • Supporting and monitoring larger contracted projects that arise from time to time.
  • Legal compliance monitoring and recording such as legionella, fire safe systems, asbestos and emergency lighting.
  • Site security.
  • Portering of post, parcels, deliveries, goods and equipment.
  • Waste and grounds management.
  • Venue set up for events and functions.
  • The focus of the role is to provide a flexible support service to the school across a diverse range of activities.
  • The post holder will be expected to provide both preventative and reactive maintenance support, lift, carry and transport goods around the site and assist with the timely completion of helpdesk requests. A high quality, courteous and friendly service is expected by the school for both internal and external customers.
  • The post holder will need to be flexible, working both independently and as part of a team.
  • There is a need for close liaison with various team members to ensure that tasks are completed for maximum efficiency.
  • Routine swimming pool water quality monitoring and recording (training will be provided if required).
  • Monitoring site issues and liaising with the Estates/Deputy Estates Manager as necessary.
  • When required liaise with external contractors whilst they are on site.
  • Contribute to the school's security and to the safety and welfare of students, colleagues, parents and visitors on campus.
  • Assist in providing on-site traffic direction and marshalling for certain events as and when required.
  • Assist the grounds team when required to maintain a safe and visually tidy site including when needed, watering of grounds.
  • Occasional inspection of all school transport, which could include the cleaning of the vehicles.
  • Periodic cover for the Estates office including answering the telephone to internal and external customers.
  • Be prepared to react to and execute any short notice tasks in support of the school.
  • Carry out any other duty that reasonably falls within the general nature and level of responsibility of the role.

Skills and Qualifications for the Handyman:

  • The successful candidate must be able to work in a team and will also be expected to work independently on specific tasks.
  • They will be expected to work in a tidy and organised manner.
  • The nature of the role means that an ability to carry out a broad range of physical work is essential.
  • The post-holder must usually hold a current full driving licence.
  • If a restricted driving licence is held on medical grounds and the medical condition changes which results in the withdrawal of the post holder's licence, this would not affect the post holder's position and the role will continue with minor exemptions.
  • Applicants will be personable, of smart appearance and have good communication skills. They will be organised, punctual and efficient in organising their workload and managing their time effectively. They will work well in a team and be responsive to advice and guidance.
  • As part of the role, you will come into contact with pupils and although you will not be responsible for teaching or caring of such pupils, the role will nevertheless involve "regulated activity". You will therefore have due regard at all times to the welfare and safeguarding of such pupils and act in accordance with Schools' safeguarding policies.
