Assistant Head of Year & Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (Maternity Cover)

  • Salary: £20,072 - £21,856 pro-rata (£26,421 - £28,770 full-time equivalent)

  • Working Hours: 32 hours per week over 5 days (Term-time plus one week)

A busy secondary school is in search of a dedicated and responsible individual to undertake a dual role as an Assistant Head of Year (AHoY) and Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) for maternity cover. The successful candidate will provide both pastoral and academic support to our pupils, ensuring they maximise their achievements and attainment.

Day to Day of the role:

  • Provide pastoral and behavioural support and interventions for all pupils within the specified year group.
  • Use initiative and contribute to planning over the short and medium term, responding independently to unexpected problems and situations.
  • Undertake DSL training and be involved in leading the safeguarding of children within the school, under the direction of the appropriate Safeguarding Manager.
  • Work with pupils with complex needs including behaviour, SEND, mental health, social and emotional needs.
  • Deliver academic and needs-based sessions to help pupils build self-esteem, skills, and aspirations.
  • Serve as an additional point of contact for parents relating to academic and pastoral issues.
  • Support other Designated Safeguarding Leads with aspects of safeguarding and welfare.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Excellent numeracy/literacy skills with GCSE (or equivalent NVQ 2 level) in Maths and English.
  • NVQ 2 or equivalent in teaching assistance or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant Level 3 qualification for Assistant Head of Year.
  • Experience in roles with high contact with parents or the public and liaising with different stakeholders.
  • Experience working with vulnerable young people with SEND/MH.
  • Good ICT skills.
