This role requires you to have lived in the UK for the last 5 years and obtain Security Check (SC) security clearance. Clearance must be obtained without any caveats that prevent you from carrying out the role you've been recruited for. If it isn't obtained, or is obtained but with caveats that prevent Jyou from carrying out the role, any conditional offer made to you will be withdrawn. Obtaining SC security clearance can be a lengthy process, and we reserve the right to withdraw any conditional offer made if the necessary security clearance isn't obtained within 12 months.

Job description

Do you have experience in ship structure and would you be enthused by the chance to support the delivery of ships into operation for the Royal Navy? If so, we are seeking focused and motivated Technical Superintendents to help deliver safe, capable, and available ships for operation by the Royal Navy and other vital services.

Joining our Combat Ships Operations (CSO) team means becoming part of the Type 23 Class Cell, a specialized unit dedicated to the comprehensive management and support of Type 23 Frigates. This team plays a crucial role in ensuring the delivery and maintenance of safe, reliable and capable maritime assets, supporting global defence operations. Through meticulous through life capability management, the exceptional work of this team ensures that these frigates remain operationally effective and ready to meet the demands of modern naval warfare.

As our Technical Superintendent you will oversee the delivery of docking periods, focussing on the development of work packages, enabling rapid local decision making and providing timely feedback between waterfront organisations, external agencies, and the Type 23 Class Cell team. This rewarding role is based at the waterfront, with the aim of fostering effective working relationships with key contacts across the organisation, all while helping us achieve our mission statement: To put the fleet to sea and keep it there, fit to fight, now and in the future.

Please note that regular attendance at the HMNB Devonport work location is essential, with occasional travel required to MOD Abbey Wood. The successful applicant is expected to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of HMNB Devonport

Please also be advised that this is a physically demanding role, and the successful applicant will undertake ship and ship repair surveillance and inspection activities. These activities may include but are not limited to, climbing vertical ladders, working at height and in confined spaces - suitable training will be provided.

Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourselves with the site, the team, and your role.

What you'll be doing

In this role, you'll have wide exposure with other areas of our business (both industry and Royal Navy) allowing you the opportunity to use your exceptional communication and influencing skills to build strong working relationships, whilst supporting us to maintain defence standards, operational guidance, and analysis tools.

Your other key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the requirements of the statutory and classification society regulations
  • Supporting projects to improve ship availability and reduce time spent in drydock
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders, organisations, and agencies
  • Supporting the successful completion of the agreed work package by managing quality, cost and time parameters, whilst overseeing the scope of work and controlling any potential work package growth
  • Authorising expenditure of funds
  • Making safety related decisions in accordance with a formal letter of delegation
  • Representing the Type 23 Platform Chief Engineer at internal and external meetings

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Hold a relevant HNC (i.e., Level 4 or higher) qualification in an Engineering discipline, OR demonstrate equivalent experience
  • Hold a Professionally Registered status or demonstrate equivalent knowledge, skills and experience
  • Have experience of providing technical advice and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes
  • Have experience with classification society requirements regarding the management of ship structure and/or stability, marine structures, OR experience with ship certification
