Job Title: School Premises Assistant

Location: Plymouth, with excellent public transport links

Salary Grade: C

Main Purpose of Job: Under the supervision of the Premises Manager, you will be responsible for the general security and maintenance of the school premises. This includes daily inspections to identify damage or vandalism, assisting with machinery and plant equipment maintenance, and ensuring a safe working and learning environment. The role requires a sympathetic approach towards the pupils and the school ethos.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the general security of the school premises.

  • Perform key holder duties and respond to emergency call-outs.

  • Assist with the maintenance of premises, machinery, and plant equipment.

  • Conduct daily inspections to identify and report damage or vandalism.

  • Clear litter daily to comply with the Environmental Protection Act.

  • Perform general maintenance tasks, including:

  • Replacing tap washers and ball valves.

  • Repairing door and window furniture.

  • Fitting coat hooks, shelves, and display boards.

  • Re-hanging doors and repairing/making good chairs and tables.

  • Carry out grounds maintenance tasks, such as:

  • Clearing leaves and litter.

  • Maintaining hard paved areas.

  • Treating pathways and steps with salt, sand, and grit.

  • Maintaining flower/shrub beds and performing remedial cutting.

  • Paint and decorate as needed to maintain the school's fabric.

  • Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade of the post.

Working Conditions:

  • Work involves following instructions but requires minor decision-making and initiative. Problems are referred to a supervisor/manager.
  • The role includes outdoor work in all weather conditions and may involve exposure to disagreeable conditions, such as cleaning bodily fluids or working with hazardous materials.

Ground Tasks:

  • Weeding hard paved areas, treating pathways and steps with salt, sand, and grit.
  • Clearing leaves and litter.
  • Maintaining hard paved areas and cleaning water receptacles.
  • Keeping drinking fountains sanitary and maintaining flower/shrub beds.

Plumbing:

  • Replacing tap washers and ball valves.
  • Repairing/connecting plumbing for washing machines.
  • Lagging external and internal pipes.

Carpentry:

  • Replacing door and window furniture.
  • Fitting coat hooks, shelves, and display boards.
  • Re-hanging doors and repairing/making good chairs and tables.

Decorating:

  • Painting and decorating as directed by the Site Manager.

General:

  • Replacing light bulbs, tubes, three-pin plug tops, and fuses.
  • Maintaining and repairing glazing, vinyl, and ceramic floor and wall tiling.
  • Minor plastering, such as patching walls.
