Shift Operations Manager

We are looking for a Shift Operations Manager to become an integral part of our Warehouse team. The role covers all warehousing activities, from inbound operations to picking and dispatch. Reporting to the National Warehouse Manager, the Shift Operations Manager is responsible for maintaining a top-tier safe working environment during shifts, managing costs according to budget and activity levels, enhancing efficiency, and fostering high colleague engagement through effective communication, continuous improvement, and the development of succession plans for the team.

Key Accountabilities

Health Safety and Welfare

  • Ensure that the yard and warehouse working environments safe and well maintained through daily inspection.
  • Ensure that all equipment (wrap machines, MHE, etc) is safe and well maintained.
  • Sign off Safe Working Procedures (SWP's) and Risk Assessments in liaison with the H&S team and ensure that all staff are always fully trained and work in compliance with SWPs.
  • Report any unsafe acts or conditions immediately and agree timed plans to resolve.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all daily and weekly auditing processes are completed fully (MHE inspections, racking, behavioural audits, etc)
  • Report and fully investigate any H&S incidents on shift in line with policy and procedures.
  • Deliver ongoing plans and initiatives designed to improve the safety of all colleagues on site.

People/Leadership

  • Manage a team of up to 40 colleagues through a team of Shift Supervisors.
  • Ensure that all colleagues are communicated with through daily/weekly briefings, 1:1 meetings, etc.
  • Conduct/lead weekly operations meeting with supervisory team
  • Manage the recruitment, retention and deployment of staff resource in line with budget and sales volume forecasts.
  • Develop and deliver training plans to ensure that all roles have sufficient, correctly trained staff on shift and that refresher training is included within the plan.
  • Control and report on absence and holidays in line with pre-agreed targets.
  • Complete all MyView and payroll administration associated with the shifts accurately and on time.
  • Ensure all shifts are aligned with Bonus KPIs and have tools to achieve and receive weekly updates.
  • Manage the continuous improvement process on shift, ensuring that initiatives are developed to conclusion in accordance with the process timelines.
  • Conduct disciplinary investigations and meetings to level of Final Written Warning.
  • Deliver succession planning strategies for colleagues in liaison with the NWM.

Customer / Process / Operations

  • Maximise pick accuracy and minimise damages by maintaining and acting upon Key Performance Indicator reports.
  • Minimise stock loss, reducing damage through auditing and control or pick locations and pick pallets.
  • Ensure that the supplier compliance standards are monitored on inbound and all non-compliance reported upon.
  • Ensure that all colleagues receive regular performance reviews encompassing pick rates, accuracy (inbound and outbound) and damages.
  • Analyse picking operations and liaise with Process Operations Manager to ensure most efficient pick walk solutions.
  • Act as point of contact for retail ASM representatives and provide timely feedback on issues and improvement actions.
  • Use PI team feedback to change or strengthen operational processes to improve stock accuracy.
  • Report weekly on KPI's and delivery of initiatives against plan

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:

Essential

  • Previous experience of supervising or managing teams of 10+ colleagues in a logistics environment.
  • Can demonstrate the ability to lead and motivate a team through engagement and consultation.
  • Previous experience of managing workflow through a WMS.
  • Strong interpersonal skills – able to manage and influence peers, colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Can model throughput against resource and forecast operational outcomes using a data led approach.
  • Experience of B2C logistics environment.
  • Ability to prioritise, multi-task and manage deadlines.
  • Experience of MS Word and Outlook.
