Your new role

  • Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Head of Commercial Services will play a proactive role in the oversight of core service areas that generate income to maximise profits whilst delivering high quality services to students. You will be working with a forward-thinking and innovative senior leadership team, who are creating a team of talented individuals. You will have supervisory responsibility for managers of the 4 main income-generating commercial areas as well as the student staff population.

Duties will include:

  • Commercial Services Management-Maximise profits from existing services, develop the range of products and services available, work with the marketing and communications department to promote the services and tailor services based on feedback.
  • Business Development- Identify opportunities to generate funding from external sources, build relationships with external organisations, and produce comprehensive business and operational plans.
  • Financial Management-Oversee the financial performance as a whole, produce an annual budget for all areas of activity, report variances in budget on a monthly basis, create action plans to respond to budget variances, and source competitive suppliers to maximise profits.
  • Staff Management-Monitor workloads of reporting staff, provide coaching and performance reviews and encourage a learning and development culture.
  • Health and Safety-Manage all responsibilities as delegated by the chief executive and ensure legislation is adhered to.
  • General-You will be hands-on, helping in any areas of your department that require support, you will attend meetings to support the chief executive, undertake professional development and promote best practise.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Be hands-on, willing to get involved to drive forward the mission of the union.
  • Experience producing and implementing strategic, operational, and business plans.
  • Proven experience of business development.
  • Experience of management in at least one of: retail sector, licenced trade, catering, lettings, other similar environments.
  • Ideally, 3 years or more of staff management experience.
  • Good understanding of Health and Safety policy and procedures.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Flexibility around working hours to achieve success.
